Did you know:⁠ ⁠ 1️⃣ Half of the people who experience their first episode of homelessness do so before the age of 25, with 40% before the age of 16.⁠ 2️⃣ Youth from racialized, Indigenous, and 2SLGBTQ+ communities are especially vulnerable to homelessness, with 2SLGBTQ+ youth comprising at least 30-40% of homeless youth.⁠ ⁠ These are the numbers from the most recent article published by our Impact & Evaluation team, aiming to share insights about the growing movement in Canada toward youth homelessness prevention.⁠ ⁠ Staff from Trellis Society approached researchers at the University of Calgary to partner on a research project. The goal was to better understand how diversion programs for youth were operating and their effectiveness in preventing youth homelessness. Thank you to all the youth, families, and local Indigenous businesses for joining us at the Indigenous Youth Carnival last Saturday! ☀️⁠ ⁠ Watching children come together to play traditional Indigenous games, dance, and learn about Indigenous heritage reminded us of the true power of truth and reconciliation - to learn and to heal. ⁠ ⁠ The event offered so many learning opportunities for youth, from learning about moose hide tanning from Wazin Îchinabi Ti House of openness, beading from artist Danielle Piper, traditional Indigenous games from Elder Peter Daniels, the incredible music from Sarah Good Medicine, and the significance of smudging from Trellis Circle Keepers, Elders. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving Indigenous traditions and knowledge. 🧡⁠ ⁠ We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the incredible Indigenous artists who joined us and enriched the event with your talents, knowledge, and conversations. Sharing these beautiful moments from our 2nd Round Dance celebration in honour of National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. 🧡⁠ Thank you Gibson Energy for sponsoring this event. ⁠ As we reflect on our journey towards reconciliation, we pledge to amplify Indigenous voices, to bear witness to the painful truths of residential schools, and to honour the stories of the children who never came home.
