In the seven years since Unity Health Toronto became a network, we have worked to drive system transformation and improve patient care by harnessing the collective power of our individual sites to create the best care experiences, together. Unity Health’s 2023-24 Annual Report highlights the ways we have leveraged the connection of our communities to be leaders in our areas of world class specialty care, artificial intelligence and health equity. Because of these communities, we have accomplished many things: having our trauma program verified as a Level 1 Trauma Centre by the American College of Surgeons, preparing for our new Electronic Patient Record, and taking meaningful steps to promote equity and to make sure everyone who works at and enters our sites feels welcomed, respected and included. This report features the hard work and dedication of so many staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and patient family partners, and tells the stories of the incredible patients and families who have sought care at our sites. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Unity Health’s achievements this year. None of it would be possible without you. Read the Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/dMM23Dfr

October is the beginning of viral season, and along with influenza and COVID-19, RSV continues to impact vulnerable groups. Infants and those who are pregnant as the colder months begin are among those most vulnerable. This year, there are new ways to protect these individuals from the harms of RSV. We talked with Dr. Mark Yudin of St. Michael's Hospital, who specializes in obstetrics, gynecology & reproductive infectious diseases, Dr. Anne Wormsbecker, consultant paediatrician at St. Joseph's Health Centre, Toronto and Marisa Cicero, senior clinical program director of Women & Children's Health at St. Joseph’s. Caring for people who are unhoused is a core part of the mission at Unity Health Toronto—a value that informs research, education, outreach and clinical care. Today, on World Homeless Day, take a look at some of the network's recent research and outreach on homelessness. Homelessness is associated with substantial excess health care costs, according to new research led by Lucie Richard & Dr. Stephen Hwang, researchers at St. Michael's Hospital's MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions. Springer Nature https://lnkd.in/gpsu9Pgr 15% of the homeless population in Toronto is over the age of 55, but there are few programs available to support vulnerable older adults with housing and mental health concerns. A 4-year pilot program at St. Michael’s aims to fill this gap. https://lnkd.in/ghk-TbRz Moss Park has the lowest life expectancy in Toronto at 74.8 years. Homelessness is a key contributor to that low lifespan. A new project by MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions and The Local Magazine compared life expectancies by neighbourhood in Toronto. https://lnkd.in/ePysxGAw The Emergency Department at St. Michael’s sees more than 4,000 visits each year from people experiencing homelessness. The ED Outreach Worker (EDOW) program improves connection to community resources for people experiencing homelessness. https://lnkd.in/g3kNkxNZ
