In case you missed it, VIFF's 2024 lineup is out in the world for you to plan your festival itinerary. Here are a few highlights, kindly presented by Knowledge Network Corporation 👇 ➡️ THE STAND Chris Auchter’s terrific doc explores a 1985 dispute over clearcut logging on Haida Gwaii. On one side are loggers, their bosses, and the BC government; on the other is the Haida Nation, which wishes to protect its traditional lands from further destruction. ➡️ CURL POWER Josephine Anderson’s uplifting and heartwarming documentary follows the 4KGirl$, a teenage curling team from Maple Ridge, BC, as they strive to become Canadian Junior Curling Champions. ➡️ INAY From the 1990s, the Live-In Caregiver Program attracted thousands of Filipino women to Canada as migrant workers, enabling them to send money back home and gain permanent residency. This film explores the psychological impact on the children who were left behind by their mothers due to economic necessity. ➡️ SO SURREAL From 1885 to 1951, the Canadian government banned the Indigenous Potlatch ceremony. Many traditional masks ended up in Europe, in museums and art collections. So Surreal: Behind the Masks explores the crucial ongoing work involved in recovery and repatriation. ➡️ 7 BEATS PER MINUTE While attempting a world record freedive in the Bahamas in 2018, Jessea Lu lost consciousness and stopped breathing for four minutes, forcing her to confront parts of her life and past she had long buried. Years later, Jessea returns to the site of her near-death experience, ready to dive again and become reborn. Get your tickets at viff.org/festival 🔗
