How are we integrating AI to benefit the work we do at Charitable Impact? Our Founder and CEO, John Bromley, shares some insights on where we are headed with AI technology.

    Charity matters

I recently had an interesting conversation with the team about how AI can benefit our work at Charitable Impact. Artificial Intelligence has been developing for years, but today, each of us can interact with it in a very accessible way. The emergence of AI today reminds me of something I’m old enough to remember: the transition of internet access from a few people to nearly everyone. (Yes, I'm that old!) The internet has changed the “how” of many things we do, making possible tasks that once seemed impossible. With that being said, I believe there are two primary ways we can leverage AI at Charitable Impact: 1. Increasing productivity in team members’ day-to-day work: While I don’t see AI replacing our team, I do see it helping them achieve more in less time. This is particularly true of work that benefits from sifting through, analyzing and interpreting vast quantities of content and other data types. 2. Helping donors with their charitable giving journeys: AI will greatly enhance donors' giving journeys by helping them navigate some of the more challenging and time-consuming aspects of charitable giving. For instance, it can start with a list of causes, topics, and/or geographies selected by a donor and quickly generate a relevant list of charities or charitable projects to explore. Even further, it could be directed to compare the financial and impact data of the charities to produce a much shorter list that is most likely to be very relevant to the inquiring donor. Though helpful, I still think humans need to make the final decision about who to give to and why…and take responsibility for their decision. For a donor-advised fund like Charitable Impact, I see AI contributing the most to the “personalization” of donor-giving journeys. I will spare my thoughts here, but I see a role for AI in democratizing certain aspects of donor coaching and help, or what some people call philanthropic advisory. AI can play an outsized role in this type of work because it’s so heavily based on existing data or new data that a donor can feed the AI with. As AI tools continue to evolve, expect them to impact and disrupt the charity sector as much as they will many other integral parts of our economy. Will it be for the better? #AI, #IoT, #MachineLearning, #Automation, #DataAnalytics #CharitableGiving #CharitableImpact
