It’s Climate Action Week across BC! 🌍📚 Libraries are rising to the challenge of climate action, and our library is no expectation with our groundbreaking Climate Writer in Residence program. In October, Sarah Barton-Bridges and librarian Kendra shared insights about this program on the British Library’s global panel, “Libraries and Positive Climate Action: Fiction, Imagination, and Hope.” Attendees from Germany, Brazil, Lebanon, and beyond tuned in to learn how this award-winning program has inspired our local community to take action on climate change, using the power of creativity and storytelling to drive real change. “Writing and literature have a vital role in climate action. Today, our team went all out for our annual Halloween costume contest, transforming the Library into a scene straight out of a storybook! Movie characters wandered the stacks, Luke from Gilmore Girls ran The LAB, and a coven of witches worked their magic on our collections. About last night... we partnered with Iron Dog Books to host the launch of Jody Wilson-Raybould's new book, Reconciling History. Co-authored with Dr. Roshan Danesh, the book is a truly unique history of our land—powerful, devastating, remarkable—as told through the voices of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Clifford Atleo Jr., Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University's School of Resource and Environmental Management, moderated a powerful discussion about reconciliation in Canada and how the voices and experiences of a few have too often dominated those of many others.
