  • Happy #FreedomFriday to one of our recent patients, the Red-necked Grebe! These incredible birds are perfectly adapted for life on the water, but entirely vulnerable if they end up on land, unable to walk or fly. This bird found itself on the porch of someone's front door, in quite a predicament. 💦 One vital aspect we monitor while diving birds are in care is their waterproofing. Waterproofing is how birds keep their body dry and insulated while swimming. The intricate way that their feathers interlock allows water to bead off, and never penetrate to the skin so they remain warm and comfortable, even in icy waters. If anything happens to damage their protective feather "coat" it can lead to serious issues like hypothermia or trouble staying afloat. We’re thrilled to share that this grebe has successfully recovered and is back where they belong, diving and thriving in the wild!

  • This spring and summer, 1,720 wildlife babies came through the doors of the Wildlife Hospital. Thanks to your support, these young ones have a chance to thrive despite facing life-threatening challenges at such a vulnerable stage. The past 45 years, we’ve cared for over 140,000 animals, and it’s your generosity that makes this possible. This #MakeAWillWeek, October 6-12, consider updating your will to build a lasting legacy that unites your family with wildlife families, helping them overcome these challenges and support generations to come. Contact us today via the link in our bio to learn more about how you can make a positive impact on your community's wildlife: https://lnkd.in/dMmB7vm. We are thankful to have you as part of this journey! ❤️

  • As fall migration has begun, we are seeing a spike in window strike cases. The number of bird-glass collisions will continue to increase as thousands of birds make their way to warmer climates. The sad reality is that around 25 million birds die annually in Canada from collisions with glass. Find more information on how to help prevent, and what to do if a bird hits your window, below.
