We are Canada's national voice for animal welfare and the federation of humane societies and SPCAs

About us

Our name reflects our vision − a Humane Canada − and that vision is shared by Canadians from coast- to-coast-to coast. Humane Canada believes that all animals possess intrinsic value, remarkable complexity and inherent dignity, and as such are deserving of respect and moral concern. On behalf of members, we advocate for the humane treatment, care and protection of all animals. We promote the concept that all animals used by humans be provided with high levels of care to ensure their health and comfort and that their behavioural needs are met. We also advocate for habitat protection and enhancement for the well-being of animals in the wild. Founded in 1957, since then we’ve earned our solid reputation and enviable credibility as the ‘go-to’ national voice on animal welfare issues for industry, media, government, non-governmental organizations and the public. We work collaboratively and cooperatively with key stakeholders based on the premise that we can have a greater impact creating positive change by being a part of the process instead of being apart from it. We drive positive, progressive change nationally to elevate animal welfare, end animal cruelty and improve animal protection through the enactment of effective legislation. We provide leadership on animal welfare issues and ensure these crucial messages are heard and understood across Canada. Humane Canada is accredited by Imagine Canada, representing the highest level of excellence in non-profit accountability, transparency and governance. Learn more about us at www.humanecanada.ca. Applications for our 2024 Arts & Science Scholarships are now open! These scholarships will be awarded to successful applicants to support projects designed to promote coexistence with wildlife. Two recipients will be awarded the scholarship: one recipient for the Arts stream and one recipient for the Science stream. The Fur-Bearers Arts & Science Scholarship was created in 2021 to support individuals who are committed to improving co-existence with wildlife in Canada. As human and non-human animal environments have become inextricably linked, it is vital that we continue to find innovative ways to live peacefully among wild animals and develop non-lethal alternatives in addressing perceived human-animal conflict. RCMP have issued a release to warn about the prevalence of online groups that exploit and manipulate young people to hurt themselves and others, including animals. In the release, they share the following warning signs for animal abuse: -Family pets or other animals are being harmed or die suspiciously. -You notice a family pet is uncharacteristically avoiding or fearful of your child or you. These groups are linked to violent extremist movements and use gaming and social media platforms to recruit and influence vulnerable youth. The RCMP ask parents, guardians and adults in positions of authority to keep an eye out for indicators that a child or youth is being targeted or exploited and report the information to Cybertip.ca or your local police. If you believe someone is in immediate danger, please call 9-1-1. Humane Canada works very hard to advocate for stronger protections and to raise awareness about the violence link and the exploitation of children and animal abuse. https://lnkd.in/gWMcpcay

Remember the love we felt for Wilbur in Charlotte’s Web as children? Pigs are intelligent, emotional, and cognitively complex animals who tend to receive an unfair reputation by society and the media. Humane Canada was formed out of a concern for the welfare of animals being slaughtered for food in Canada. We continue to play an important role in farmed animal welfare in Canada, advocating for continual improvements to the standards for farmed animal care that are included in Canada’s codes of practice. Canada’s housing and affordability crisis is forcing many Canadians to face discriminatory “no pet” clauses when seeking new housing due to rising rents and renovictions. Every day, someone must choose between a home and a beloved pet. It's time to address this issue head-on. Pet-inclusive housing reduces stress and loneliness for tenants, lowers turnover rates for landlords, and enhances social connections in communities. Use your voice to create a more inclusive and compassionate housing system in Canada! Humane Canada has partnered with MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith and our members nationwide to ensure renters with pets are included in a national Renters' Bill of Rights.
