Witten’s lawyers, clients and friends are known for their love of and support for our local and national sports teams. Their passion is so profound that they even lined the streets of Greece to witness the historic journey of the Olympic flame from Athens to Paris. We recently received these pictures from the charming town of Nafplio in Greece, where the Olympic flame made its passage. And, as it happened, one of our mugs was present, too. From all of us at Witten, our heartfelt wishes to the entire Canadian team at the 2024 Olympic Games: Go for Gold! 🍁🥇🔥 #WittenLLP #WittenInTheWild

About us
WITTEN LLP has its roots in the early 1900s when the late Abe W. Miller, Q.C. opened an office in downtown Edmonton. Through orderly and planned growth we grew to become the WITTEN LLP law firm of today, with over 50 lawyers and 100 support staff. Careful recruiting ensures these individuals come from diverse, yet complementary backgrounds and have a strong sense of commitment to the community. The result is a firm that provides each of our clients with experience and expertise in a wide range of legal areas. Our lawyers devote time and effort in support of charitable, educational, political and community endeavors and organizations as part of our ongoing commitment to the community. Former partners of our firm have moved on to prominent roles in Canadian industry, the judiciary, The Law Society of Alberta and the University of Alberta. WITTEN LLP's current partners are actively involved in the community through local government, public service directorships and as members of charitable, service and political boards and agencies. WITTEN LLP also has a strong commitment to legal education. Our lawyers serve as lecturers at the Faculty of Law and frequently present papers and lectures at legal education seminars for lawyers and industry. Our clients find that our long-standing background in business law blends with an aggressive contingent of litigation lawyers to create a balanced, dynamic and highly responsive firm.

Looking for something to read this summer? Look no further! Earlier this year, Witten partners Keltie Lambert and Justine Mageau discussed a significant Federal Court decision that reaffirms the Métis Settlements’ self-government rights. The court ruled that Canada breached its duty to consult with the Metis Settlements General Council (MSGC) on the Métis Nation Self-Government Deal. This pivotal ruling serves as a reminder of the importance of consultation and respect for inherent rights in the journey towards reconciliation. Our firm had the privilege of representing one of the applicants, the MSGC, in this impactful case. Read more about this decision in our blog post. #WittenLLP #WittenSummerReads

#AtelierLogement #NouveauxArrivants #EngagementCommunautaire #FRAP #AJEFA

It’s no secret that Edmonton, our team at Witten, and our firm’s clients and friends are passionate sports fans. So, it may not come as a surprise that one of our mugs found its way to the MetLife Stadium earlier this week, home of the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets, for Canada’s semifinals game at the Copa América 2024. It’s always a a great joy when our valued clients and friends include us in their adventures. For us, it’s more than just a mug in a photo, it’s a symbol of our shared journey. And with the Third Place Match on the horizon this Saturday, from all of us at Witten: Go, Team Canada, Go! 🍁⚽🍁 #WittenLLP #WittenInTheWild

Looking for something to read this summer? Look no further! Earlier this year, Witten partner Ellery Lew discussed the significant case Durand v Higgins, which was decided in spring by the Alberta Court of King’s Bench. This case underscores the legal challenges of social media and the severe repercussions of online defamation. It serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with reposting defamatory material and explores the jurisdictional challenges of internet posts. This ruling is significant in Canadian law and for our society, and with respect to jurisdiction and online defamation. It is a noteworthy victory for our client in clearing his name and absolving him of the criminal behavior he was wrongly accused of.
