Witten’s lawyers, clients and friends are known for their love of and support for our local and national sports teams. Their passion is so profound that they even lined the streets of Greece to witness the historic journey of the Olympic flame from Athens to Paris. We recently received these pictures from the charming town of Nafplio in Greece, where the Olympic flame made its passage. And, as it happened, one of our mugs was present, too. From all of us at Witten, our heartfelt wishes to the entire Canadian team at the 2024 Olympic Games: Go for Gold! 🍁🥇🔥 #WittenLLP #WittenInTheWild

Tomorrow is the start of the Paris Olympic Games! The United Kingdom is the only nation that has been represented at every modern Olympic Games and Team GB have won a gold medal at every summer Olympics since 1896! The modern Olympic Games were inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. The modern Games were revived in the late 19th century by Baron Pierre de Coubertin and have been held every four years since 1896, with the exception of interruptions due to World War I and World War II. Clearly this needs a new mug of history @teamGB @Paris2024 #Olympics #TeamGB #Paris #TheBest https://lnkd.in/evTzsDJM https://lnkd.in/dxreBMic

🌟 Citius, Altius, Fortius 🌟 The Paris Olympic Games have officially begun! From July 26 to August 11, 2024, over 10,500 athletes from around the world will compete in 32 sports categories. With an event of this magnitude, swift resolution of sporting disputes is essential. To address this need, CAS has established two temporary offices in Paris during the Games and the 10 days leading up to them: 1️⃣ **CAS Ad Hoc Division**: Handles legal disputes arising during the Games. 2️⃣ **CAS Anti-Doping Division**: Adjudicates anti-doping matters. Both divisions are dedicated to ensuring fair play and upholding the Olympic spirit. This temporary tribunal has been a fixture at every Summer and Winter Olympics since 1996, providing prompt, high-quality dispute resolution services, with decisions often rendered within 24 hours for urgent cases. No.9 wishes all athletes the best of luck and hopes the arbitrators find plenty of free time to enjoy the venues! 😀 #Olympics #SportsLaw #CAS #Paris2024 #FairPlay #No9

The Olympic Rings were created in 1913 by Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games. They represent the union of the five inhabited continents: Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. The colors, along with the white background of the Olympic flag, were chosen because at least one of these colors appears on all the national flags of the world. The meaning is said to be: "Blue" ring: represents Europe. "Yellow" ring: represents Asia. "Black" ring: means Africa. "Green" ring: represents Oceania. "Red" ring: symbolizes America.

The tradition of the #Olympic Truce – Ekecheiria – has been to ensure a halt of all hostilities, allowing the safe passage and participation of athletes and spectators taking part in the Olympic Games. The resolution reaffirms that the Olympic values of peace, solidarity and respect are as important across the world today as they were over 3,000 years ago, when the ancient Olympic Games first took place in Greece. #Paris2024

### Blood in the Water: The 1956 Water Polo Clash Hey sports fans, Let’s rewind to a legendary water polo match from the 1956 Melbourne Olympics that was anything but ordinary. This game was steeped in political drama and raw emotion. 1. **The Setup**: Just weeks before the Games, Soviet tanks had rolled into Budapest, crushing a revolution and claiming around 3,000 Hungarian lives. This clash wasn’t just about water polo—it was a battle for national pride. 2. **The Game Plan**: The Hungarian team, looking to avenge their country’s turmoil, aimed to get under the Soviets’ skin. They planned to play a tough, physical game to unsettle their opponents and capitalize on any mistakes. 3. **The Incident**: With Hungary dominating 4-0 late in the game, tensions boiled over. Soviet players got rough, and Hungarian Ervin Zador ended up with a nasty eye injury after a brutal hit. The situation ignited the crowd, leading to chaos and police intervention. 4. **The Outcome**: Hungary snagged the gold medal in a game that was more than just a victory; it was a symbol of resistance and resilience. However, the game left a mark—many Hungarian players sought refuge from political oppression in the wake of the match. 5. **The Legacy**: “Blood in the Water” wasn’t just a nickname; it was a vivid reminder of how sports can intertwine with global politics and human suffering. This match stands as a stark example of how Olympic events can reflect deeper, often painful, realities. Catch you next time with more from the annals of Olympic history! #BloodInTheWater #Melbourne1956 #WaterPolo #HungaryVsSoviets #OlympicDrama #SportsAndPolitics #ErvinZador #HistoricalMatches #OlympicGold #ColdWarAthletics
