November marks Family Violence Prevention Month. In Alberta, the rate of police-reported intimate partner violence against women is 535 incidents per 100,000 people—significantly higher than the national average of 461 per 100,000 (Statistics Canada, 2022). In Shelter Movers first year of operations in Alberta, they have seen the impact that can be can made. Tackling this issue requires more than just reacting to it—it calls for proactive, thoughtful solutions that address the root causes. Here are 5 key philosophies Shelter Movers shared that you can embrace to help prevent violence against women and girls in your community. 1. Center Women’s Voices: Empower women to speak up and lead. Amplifying women’s voices helps break down traditional power imbalances in workplaces, relationships, and communities. 2. Adopt an Intersectional Approach: Women’s experiences of violence are shaped by factors like race, class, and ability. Acknowledging these differences helps create more effective, inclusive strategies. 3. Empower Youth: Adolescence is a pivotal time for learning about healthy relationships and gender-based violence. Teaching young people early on can foster a generation that rejects all forms of abuse. 4. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone: Volunteering in new spaces brings fresh perspectives. It can challenge traditional ideas and influence others, even reshaping what it means to be a “man.” 5. Be Survivor-Centered: Listen to survivors. Believe their stories, respect their experiences, and support their healing. They know what they need to rebuild their lives. These are just a few ways we can work together to create a future free from violence for all women and girls. Alberta Council of Women's Shelters (ACWS)

  • This month we learned about the Wings of Providence Build a Backpack campaign when they shared with us an immediate need. Here's what they wrote us. "I am reaching out to share an urgent need at WINGS, our second stage shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence. As you may know, we are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for our residents, and this mission is enhanced by the incredible support we receive from partners like you in the community. At WINGS, we have several projects underway, all aimed at empowering our families and helping them rebuild their lives. However, we've recently encountered an immediate need that we hope you can assist with. Each year, thanks to the generous donation of a long-term supporter, we provide our children with new school sneakers to ensure they start the school year ready and confident. Since the distribution of that donation and In just the past week and a half, we have welcomed 15 new children into our facilities. To prepare them for school, we have already supplied them with backpacks and school supplies, but we would love to provide them with the necessary footwear as well. We are seeking support from the Wolfe Pack Warriors Foundation to help us purchase 15 new pairs of shoes and socks for these children. We are incredibly grateful for your consideration of this request. Your support would make a significant difference in the lives of these children, helping them feel equipped and ready for a successful school year. We look forward to the possibility of collaborating with your wonderful foundation and building a lasting relationship." We are absolutely able to help! Wings of Providence thank you for the work you are doing to support kids and their families!
