John, a 24-year-old Langley resident, faced multiple challenges in his early career journey. Holding two casual positions as a recreation attendant and a guest experience staff, John was unsure of his future in these roles due to his disability. Despite having a certificate in Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology from BCIT and volunteering to troubleshoot computer software and hardware in his community, John struggled with verbal and nonverbal communication, making it difficult to secure stable employment. The Langley WorkBC Centre provided John with job search workshops and arranged for a DRENA assessment, giving him valuable insights into how his disability might impact his employment journey. He was then referred to the VOICE program at Douglas College. The VOICE program is specifically designed for BIPOC clients with disabilities. The City of Langley is developing an Urban Forest Management Strategy (UFMS) to guide the long-term planning and management of Langley’s urban forest. The City of Langley’s urban forest is comprised of forests in distinct natural areas surrounding the urban core, including forest parks, wetlands, as well as urban trees along streets, in parks, and in private yards. The urban forest provides important benefits to the community – it supports high levels of biodiversity, provides high-value recreation opportunities, improves air quality, manages stormwater, and beautifies neighbourhoods. Langley’s urban forest also plays a critical role in the culture of Host Nations (The q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), Máthxwi (Matsqui), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) and e’mya’me (Semiahmoo) First Nations) as well as the City’s character and identity. They are currently in the second phase and are focusing on gathering feedback on the draft Urban Forest Management Strategy (UFMS) and priorities for implementation. The Phase 2 Survey will be available until October 31st, 2024! You can fill out the survey online here: https://lnkd.in/gnyAyWPm
