BCxA developed the Essential Attributes to ensure high standards, accountability, and professionalism for Commissioning Providers (CxPs). The 1st Attribute states that the CxP oversees the commissioning process and makes final recommendations on system performance. This role is vital because it ensures that building systems function as designed, aligning with the owner’s goals and driving long-term efficiency. Thank you for attending NCBFO2024. BCxA Eastern Canada Chapter
Earlier today, Caroline Karvonen, our Senior Director, Sustainability and Stakeholder Relations attended the National Commissioning Association’s National Conference on Building and Facility Operations. With representation from Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, the panel provided the building owners/operators perspective on Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx). The panel reviewed a number of elements including: • Numerous benefits - including reduction in energy consumption and utility cost. • Primary drivers - occupant comfort but also addressing climate goals set by organizations to reduce energy consumption. • Key consideration when choosing and working with consultants, including being specific/prescriptive in requirements, and being curious/asking questions so you can grow and develop together. • Impact of technology - while AI is starting to be implemented in buildings, it is still a few years off. However, the Internet of Things is being heavily utilized in combination with the knowledge of building technicians. • Funding - many have funded EBCx through their operations budgets. The audience was reminded about the availability of IESO’s SaveOnEnergy funding for EBCx, now available for eligible properties in Ontario.
