Gibby’s Field, a new park in East Vancouver’s Kensington-Cedar Cottage neighbourhood, was officially opened in September 2024. This 0.15-hectare green space, developed on the last remaining section of the historical Gibson’s Creek, features an accessible pathway, natural vegetation, and an engineered wetland designed to capture and clean 90% of annual rainfall. The park aims to enhance biodiversity and manage rainwater runoff, filtering out pollutants before the water returns to the ground. The project is supported by the City of Vancouver’s Capital Plan and the Government of Canada’s Natural Infrastructure Fund. Read more about the initiative below! 🌿⬇️

Keeping our water clean and watersheds healthy so that wild salmon can thrive.
About us
Salmon-Safe BC is one of Canada’s first and only eco-certification programs linking land management practices with the protection of watersheds. Salmon-Safe recognizes progressive, environmentally friendly management practices on agricultural and urban lands to help protect Pacific salmon habitat and enhance water quality. By adopting Salmon-Safe standards, developers, landowners and property managers can help ensure this iconic species thrives for future generations and showcase their mark of leadership and commitment to the health of BC’s watersheds. The program began in Oregon in 1996 and is active across Washington, Oregon and California. Salmon-Safe was launched in British Columbia in 2011 under the leadership of the Pacific Salmon Foundation and the Fraser Basin Council. In 2018, Salmon-Safe BC was transitioned fully to the Fraser Basin Council. The Salmon-Safe BC program provides assessments and certification for both agricultural and urban sites across BC.

As harvest time is coming to a close and winter is starting to feel like it’s around the corner, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all our Salmon-Safe growers! 🙌 This year, the cold snap in January greatly impacted grapes and stone fruit in the interior of BC, with extreme temperatures reducing yields and damaging plants. Despite navigating these challenges, our growers have continued to protect these landscapes for salmon, by: - Protecting and restoring streams and riparian areas -Managing their water use -Preventing erosion and controlling sediment -Managing pests and protecting water quality -Following Salmon-Safe animal management practices -Enhancing biodiversity at a landscape level Thank you for supporting and protecting BC salmon! 🐟 #salmonsafe #bcsalmon #pacificsalmon #salmonhealth

🐟 The Pacific Salmon Foundation’s State of Salmon 2024 Report provides an evaluation of the status of all six species of Pacific salmon, including steelhead, in British Columbia and the Yukon. The report highlights significant declines in salmon populations, with over 70% of the assessed combinations of regions and species falling below their long-term averages. Despite these challenges, the report also identifies areas of resilience and opportunities for recovery, emphasizing the urgent need for coordinated action to address climate change, habitat degradation, and other threats.
