Supply chain-wide collaboration for a fair and thriving ASM cobalt sector

About us

FCA is a multi-stakeholder action platform that brings together the entire cobalt mineral supply chain to provide an answer to increasing scrutiny on ASM cobalt mining and the DRC mining sector. Our purpose is to assist in the building of a DRC cobalt mining sector that is known to be a responsible partner in providing the minerals needed for a new green economy. This includes mobilising the resources of the whole supply chain to deliver technical assistance and investment to realise the vision of a formal, fair and safe ASM cobalt sector. Artisanal cobalt mining is only ever associated with negative impacts on ASM communities. Although the ASM sector is indeed in many cases characterized by poor and dangerous working conditions and child labour. FCA challenges this overly simple perspective of cobalt mining in the DRC. We know that it doesn’t have to be like this. With support and investment, sites can be improved. Also, we believe artisanal cobalt is not just a problem. It simultaneously harbours great opportunities: for the global energy transition towards cleaner electrification; but also and just as importantly as a potent driver for community development in the DRC, in Lualaba, in the households of mine workers and for their families. This vision makes the FCA more than a transient development project – but a solid collaboration that unites the supply chain and works towards a clear vision for ASM in ten years from now. The vision is not for a collection of one-off projects, unconnected, unplanned, implemented on the boundaries of a few large mining concessions. But rather, a joined-up approach that maximises positive impact in the sector. So much good happens in isolation across the DRC. Imagine if it were all coordinated! Collaboration is key to change as collaboration leads to greater impact than working alone. The impact of working together is greater than the sum of the parts.

The recording of our third panel on artisanal mining is out! This panel was organized in collaboration with the Fair Cobalt Alliance (FCA), and Assheton Stewart Carter, Executive Director, was our esteemed moderator, introducing us to the occupational health and safety risks as well as livelihood risks that artisanal miners face, and the need to integrate them into the formal economy. Emmanuel Makumba Mali, PhD, Director for Democracy and Good Governance Programme, ICGLR - Levy Mwanawasa Regional Centre for Democracy and Good Governance shared about the history of conflict in the sector and the difficulty in governing it. ICGLR therefore aims to formalize ASM, equip artisanal miners with skills, and ensure value addition and beneficiation. One such initiative and success story is the ICGLR regional certification mechanism. Chiugo Aghaji, Extractives and Sustainability Manager, CEA Consulting emphasized that there is no substitute for good governance, trnsparency and accountability in the extractive sector. There is no lack of governance structures, but a lack of policy implementation of such structures. ASM should be included in legal frameworks and national development plans, and cooperatives can be put together to help with formalization and legalization. Monica Gichuhi, Mineral Governance Consultant, QUADZ CONSULTING SERVICES LLP highlighted that legalization of the sector would help increase production and ensure protection in occuaptional health and safety issues, and that access to financing would be essential in this process of formalization and professionalization. Finally, Guillaume de Brier, Researcher, IPIS - International Peace Information Service shared that regulations, such as the Dodd-Frank Act on conflict minerals, have been all stick and no carrot, and that there is a need to incentivize miners to formalize. What artisanal miners need is investment, and this financing could also be a means to put in place proper standards in ASM. This was a highly engaging session on a slightly "niche" and therefore all the more valuable topic. Thanks to all the speakers and their great insights! #energytransition #criticalminerals #asm

For the first time since its inception in 2018, the Paris Peace Forum, a global convenor of state and non-state actors working together to address salient global challenges, turned its attention towards artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), at its first event outside of Paris in Morocco. Taking on the #fairtransition theme, this meeting was especially significant as this was the first time the forum turned its attention to artisanal and small-scale mining, in partnership with the Fair Cobalt Alliance (FCA), a signatory to the forum’s Acting Together for a Responsible Critical Minerals Sector Call to Action, that calls for investment into the sector. Moderating a panel at this year's Paris Peace Forum in Morocco on Bridging and Local Perspectives—Integrating Artisanal Mining as Key for the Energy Transition, Assheton Stewart Carter, our Chief Strategist and Special Advisor to the Forum's Global Council on Transition Minerals, officially launched at the event, reflected on the socio-economic importance of ASM in the global cobalt value chain and the incredible opportunity the mineral holds to create lasting local prosperity. The Council, still under formulation, highlights the crucial importance being given to critical minerals, from where they are resourced to how their exploitation should ensure a just energy transition that is inclusive of the communities in which they come from. Stay tuned for how this takes shape! Joined on stage by Chiugo Aghaji, Emmanuel Makumba Mali, PhD, Monica Gichuhi, and Guillaume de Brier, we are grateful to the forum for championing ASM inclusion and including our team in advancing a just energy transition. #ParisPeaceForum #EnergyTransition #ArtisanalMining #SustainableFuture
