The answer to global demand for more socially and environmentally responsible mining.
About us
The Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) is a coalition of nongovernment organizations, mining companies, businesses purchasing minerals and metals for resale in other products, affected communities, and trade unions. IRMA's vision is that of a world in which the mining industry is respectful of the human rights and the aspirations of affected communities; provides safe, healthy and respectful workplaces; avoids or minimizes harm to the environment; and leaves positive legacies. Our mission is to establish a multi-stakeholder and independently-verified responsible mining assurance system that improves social and environmental performance and creates value for the mine sites which lead. The Standard for Responsible Mining launched in June 2018 is a precedent-setting global certification program for industrial-scale mine sites. With growing awareness and demand for ecologically and socially-responsible products jewelers, electronics businesses and others have sought assurances that the minerals they purchase are mined responsibly. The Standard for Responsible Mining’s best practice requirements for mining include elements such as health and safety for workers, human rights, community engagement, pollution control, mining in conflict-affected areas, rights of indigenous peoples, transparency in revenue payments from companies to governments, and land reclamation once mining is done.

J. J. Messner de Latour lead an impact panel at Mercedes-Benz AG this past week looking at how different sectors leverage #irma Thank you for the meaningful conversation.
Responsible Sourcing - Traceability and Minerals Integrity at Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance
It was a privilege to facilitate such an incredible multistakeholder panel at Mercedes-Benz AG HQ in Stuttgart to examine how different sectors utilize and leverage IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance mine-site audits. It was impactful to not only hear of the value of IRMA audits in meeting such vastly different stakeholder needs, but it also highlighted how #IRMA audits have become almost routine. A few takeaways from a panel asked one simple question -- how do IRMA audits drive value for you and your sector? 🚀 For mines, IRMA audits and the audit process provide a clear roadmap and driver toward operational excellence. The audit is as much for a mine's own operational and strategic benefit as it is for anybody else's. 🤝 For impacted communities, nothing about us without us. The *process* of the IRMA audit provides as much or more value to communities as the audit itself. It provides an opportunity for inclusiveness, fairness, dignity, and importantly, a voice. 💲 As demand for mining rapidly increases, so too does the need for capital to finance it. For investors, IRMA audits provide the necessary visibility and assurance to credibly understand an investment's risk profile and suitability for investment, thus providing a clearer path to enabling that access to capital. 🙏 Thank you to Johannes Danz, Ashley Hamilton Claxton, Katie Fergusson, Jim Wormington, Glen Mpufane, and Meshack Mbangula for your insights on #ResponsibleMining. (And of course a big thank you to Mercedes-Benz for hosting us!) 🧦 And to put to rest any rumour to the contrary, no, I did not pinch my socks off the Hamburglar.
