Pinch us? 🤩 We double checked, and no, we're not dreaming! Over the past couple of days, we learned that not only were we selected as a winner of MassChallenge Switzerland's 2024 program — we've also been selected as one of six finalists (out of 1,100+ applicants) for the 100k Louis Dreyfus Company Climate Resilience Prize! LDC is a major player in the trade of agricultural commodities that go into the food we eat and the clothes we wear. They're the link between the suppliers on the ground and the companies that make the products we buy as consumers. Given their position, they have a massive opportunity to protect our natural ecosystems and the people who depend on them...which is all of us. Later this month, we'll have the chance to make our case for how better data can end #deforestation from agriculture and how this prize can help us get there. We're proud to be in this race with innovators Darween, EcoBean, GroGuru Inc, Solumar and Volare Solutions. If you'll be in Lausanne, join us for the awards ceremony on Oct 31 or tune in to the livestream. Register here >> https://lnkd.in/ekGm2SYY

Next week, AdAstra co-founder Jürgen Reinhard and senior consultant Lisanne de Weert are heading to Barcelona for LCA FOOD 2024. If you’ll be there, be sure to say hi! (You’ll know it’s them because they’re super friendly and are probably debating something like how to divide peat emissions between LUC and land management.) Better yet, come to one of their sessions. See you there? —— Monday, September 9, 12 pm Quantifying land conversion carbon emissions in the absence of traceability >> A look at how AdAstra unraveled the complexity of the climate impacts of soy embedded in animal feed, presented by Jürgen Monday, September 9, 4:30 pm Opportunities from land use change assessments frameworks to unlock supply chain interventions >> A panel discussion comparing sLUC, jurisdictional dLUC in Brazil and the global application of jurisdictional dLUC, featuring Jürgen, Iana Câmara Salim of Mérieux NutriSciences | Blonk and Renan Milagres Novaes of Embrapa, moderated by Lisanne Tuesday, September 10, 11:45 am Trase/Orbae: Spatially explicit supply chain mapping of forest-risk commodities for scope 3 GhG emissions >> The presentation of a mapping approach that reveals the jurisdictions of production of commodities imported into the EU, allowing for commodity-specific direct LUC and scope 3 GHG assessments for users whose supply chain information may be incomplete or unknown. There was a lot we didn’t know back then. Not much satellite data was available on the public domain. And what existed in the commercial realm was expensive. We had little information about which crops were growing where, and even less that stayed up to date. 10 years ago, statistical land use change — sLUC — was the right thing to do. When you can’t know more, you make a best guess about where the problem is coming from. You design a climate strategy that aims to fix said problem. And you hope it works. But the problem didn’t go away. The forests were still cleared. Grasslands overturned. Peatlands drained. More and more and more. Today is no longer back then. Today we can do better than best guesses. We can observe the changes humans are inflicting on the land across the globe. We can see what’s taking the place of the forests and the grasslands and the wetlands. Today we have less than five and a half years until 2030 — the global deadline for halting land conversion. This is why we built Orbae. Because we can do better, and we must. Orbae uses satellite imagery to build land conversion data in high resolution from the ground up — field per field, country by country, commodity by commodity. We call this jurisdictional direct land use change, or jurisdictional dLUC. It’s the accuracy of dLUC with the scalability of sLUC. We won’t pretend like getting the accounting right is the only thing we need to stop deforestation. Far from it. It’s a complex problem that requires many solutions. But getting the accounting right is one of them. An important one. This isn’t about tweaking the numbers. It’s about having confidence in the accuracy of the data so your climate strategy is set up for success. The reality is that many companies, even the most advanced, are struggling to get traceability. That’s why, starting today, we’re offering our high-fidelity land conversion data aggregated to country level. 1 commodity. All available countries. 900 CHF. With jurisdictional dLUC, your carbon accounting is rooted in 30 m resolution, even if all you know is the country of origin. Not having traceability is no longer an excuse for inaction on deforestation. It’s time to move forward. Contact us to get started and let’s do this. —— Try Orbae for free: orbae.eco See what’s on shelf and coming soon: https://lnkd.in/gapyszZJ #LUC #landconversion #deforestation #FLAG

🍗 What role does soy play in the #carbonfootprint of chicken production? #Soy is one of the main ingredients in chicken feed and is grown in #Brazil and across Latin America and imported into #Europe. The expansion of soy production is one of the main drivers of #deforestation and land conversion. 📈Trase teamed up with AdAstra Sustainability to help a leading food manufacturer understand how soy in animal feed changes the carbon footprint of its chicken products. AdAstra’s carbon footprinting technology Orbae used Trase data to identify the origins of the soy and calculated corresponding land conversion emission factors. “Tapping into Trase data takes our own data to the next level. The project on soy offers a blueprint for other commodities used in animal feed, and paves the way for the consideration of important metrics such as land occupation, #biodiversity loss and water stress,” said Dr Jürgen Reinhard, Co-founder, AdAstra. 🔎 Here’s how Trase and AdAstra supported the company to address the #climate impacts of its supply chain ⬇ https://lnkd.in/eArPw7wy

There’s a new way of measuring greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and other types of land conversion. It’s more accurate than sLUC. It’s more scalable than dLUC. And it works with whatever level of traceability you have. We call it jdLUC — jurisdictional direct land use change — and it’s at the heart of our product Orbae. The best way to understand the power of jdLUC is to see it for yourself, which is why we’ve made two of our datasets available for free. Create an account to get full access to our land conversion datasets for soy in Brazil and palm in Malaysia, including interactive maps to explore emission factors from the national level down to each and every municipality.
