Yesterday’s release of Europol’s Serious and Organised Crime Threat Assessment highlights how corruption is "one of the most insidious enablers of organised crime" — and how digital innovation is transforming both crime AND law enforcement. That’s why research initiatives like the EU Horizon FALCON – Fighting Corruption and Organised Crime project are so critical. We're proud to be part of this dynamic coalition, bringing not only our expertise in research and innovation (shoutout to Claudia Baez Camargo, Jacopo Costa, Saba Kassa, PhD + team! 🙌) but also real-world insights into: ❓ What’s really driving corruption and organised crime in different contexts ❓ What does law enforcement need — data, analysis, tools — to effectively fight back? Want to learn more? Project Coordinator Evgenia Adamopoulou (Jenny) breaks it down in this Q&A: https://lnkd.in/eNrE3aks

The Metals Technology Initiative is a fine example of how companies can proactively collaborate to improve their own ethics and compliance efforts – as well as tackle shared challenges of integrity and fair business in their industry. Delighted to host the group in Basel last week for two days of meetings facilitated by Gemma Aiolfi, Scarlet Wannenwetsch and Niels Wohlwend. The members met with our new Executive Director Elizabeth Andersen and planned to kickstart several projects in the coming months, with our continued support as Secretariat. Kudos to the members Danieli Group, Primetals Technologies, SMS group and Tenova for engaging in Collective Action to improve ethical standards and fair business for the benefit of all. 👏 🇿🇲 Congratulations to five talented individuals from Zambia’s law enforcement and prosecution authorities, who have successfully completed the train-the-trainer programme of our International Centre for Asset Recovery (ICAR). Now certified as ICAR trainers, Lloyd Kabwela, Darlington Mukelelabo, Sipholiano Phiri, Hastings Sichone and Sibongile Mwansa will be able to deliver high-impact financial investigations and asset recovery training to peers across the country. This will greatly boost Zambia’s efforts to build capacity to investigate corruption and confiscate illicit assets, at home and abroad. 🙏 Warm thanks to Director of Public Prosecutions Gilbert Phiri for calling us the "real deal". And of course to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for the continuing support to our Zambian partners committed to combating corruption and financial crime. How can law enforcement keep up with evolving threats from cyber and crypto-related crime? 🔍️Vincent Danjean, Head of INTERPOL’s Cyberspace and New Technologies Laboratory, explains in this Q&A. He emphasises: 1️⃣ A networked approach to investigations – because cybercriminals operate globally, while investigations are often local and siloed. 2️⃣ Automation to generate blockchain intelligence – manual tracing is no longer sufficient to keep up with criminals' advanced laundering techniques. 3️⃣ A shift from "thinking in tools" to "thinking in data" – i.e. focusing on structured, shareable and interoperable blockchain data to enhance investigations. 4️⃣ Establishing empirically tested standards of analysing and interpreting blockchain data. 👉 Read it here: https://lnkd.in/etpMgk8A 💡 Catch Vincent at the Blockchain Intelligence Forum in Bucharest on 10 April (we're supporting the event and will be there too). https://lnkd.in/eZ_HDMhr

Organised criminals, scammers, state-backed hackers, professional money launderers – those on the dark side are increasingly adept at abusing crypto assets and services to get away with their deeds and money. They leave their traces all over the blockchain... but getting quality intelligence from blockchain to prevent and combat these crimes is difficult. And current capabilities don't match the scale of the problem. Bogdan Vacusta (National Bank of Romania), NICO DI GABRIELE (personal views) (European Central Bank) and Victor Vevera (The National Institute for Research & Development in Informatics - ICI Bucharest ) are driving efforts to improve the quality of blockchain intelligence. In this in-depth Q&A, they cover: 🔹 the concept of blockchain intelligence and practical use cases 🔸 the quality of current blockchain intelligence, including questions over blockchain evidence used in court 🔹 the need for recognised standards and professional training to build capabilities in the public and private sectors. The topic will be a major focus of the inaugural Blockchain Intelligence Forum in Bucharest on 10 April, which the Basel Institute is supporting. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/e3FTe_h5
