They are among the world’s most productive environments upon which many species of plants and animals depend for survival.  🛑 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦: 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐞𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Indeed, farming practices can significantly impact wetland extent and health through activities such as land use conversion, water diversion for irrigation, soil erosion, changes in species composition and their behaviour, and increased agrochemical pollution. One telling figure: in the last 300 years, approximately 21% of the world’s inland wetlands have been converted to other land uses, primarily due to conversion to croplands. 🟩 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨: There is a pressing need to transform food production systems to simultaneously enhance agricultural productivity, increase resilience and enhance social welfare, while preserving natural resources, including wetlands. 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 by practices that focus on reducing inputs, enhancing soil and animal health, promoting biodiversity, diversifying livelihoods. ⌛ 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐦: The 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐬𝐚𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐞𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬, adopted in 1971, serves as the 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 to protect wetlands and sensitize governments about their importance. 2025 is a key year for the food system <> wetland nexus as Zimbabwe is hosting 𝐑𝐀𝐌𝐒𝐀𝐑’𝐬 𝐂𝐎𝐏𝟏𝟓 𝐢𝐧 𝐙𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐰𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟐𝟑-𝟑𝟏 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲. We hope that the 172 Parties to the Convention will 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐞𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 as a key lever for the protection of wetlands! 🚨 𝟭𝟱𝟯 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗶𝗻 an open letter: 𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 🌍🍽️ Last week, Nobel and World Food Prize laureates issued a warning: our current approach to 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 is pushing humanity toward greater food insecurity and instability. In their open letter, they make it clear: “𝗪𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲.” At #Biovision, we believe agroecology and resilient food systems must be at the heart of this transformation. Supporting smallholder farmers, protecting biodiversity, and fostering sustainable agriculture are key to ensuring a food-secure future. 🌱 Biovision’s founder, Hans R Herren, is himself a laureate of the World Food Prize Foundation and, together with Biovision, a recipient of the Right Livelihood Award (the Alternative Nobel Prize). His commitment to sustainable agriculture and food security continues to drive our mission forward. 🔗 Read the full open letter here: https://lnkd.in/g_MCqzuU #FoodSecurity #Agroecology #SustainableFoodSystems #ClimateAction #FutureOfFood

  • 🌍𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘀: 𝗪𝗘𝗙 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 Our colleague Fabio Leippert represented Biovision at the 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘀 - a gathering of global leaders, experts, and innovators to spotlight the critical importance of agrobiodiversity. Back from this thought-provoking event at the 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘁𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱, he shares some main take-aways about the importance of #agrobiodiversity and the discussions around it. From keynote speakers like 𝗚𝘂𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻 and world food prize winner Dr. Geoff Hawtin to engaging panel discussions with experts from Deloitte, the International Seed Federation, ministers from #Peru and #Southafrica, all highlighted the urgency and necessity of protecting and fostering our crop diversity. Be it through #seedbanks or more importantly on farms by supporting farmers who are using and nurturing it. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗻𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁! 🍴 The culinary experience led by Chef Rebecca Clopath was a also standout for him. She showcased the untapped potential of diverse crops through creative, delicious tasting dishes. It was a powerful reminder that innovation in the kitchen is just as important as action in the fields.   Feeling inspired to be part of this global movement to secure the future of food, Fabio sees the event as a clear mandate for Stiftung Biovision and its partners to continue their engagement in agroecology, support smallholder farmers, and strengthen and forge new alliances for this cause.   #FoodForever #Davos2025 #Sustainability #CropDiversity #FoodSecurity #ClimateAction

From vibrant vegetable fields to herds of cattle with majestic local breed bulls 🐂, and meeting rooms filled with ideas, the journey was nothing short of motivating. 𝗔 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁? Anders had the unique honor of participating in the celebration of a new well in a Maasai village - a truly memorable experience together with our key partner Sustainable Agriculture Tanzania (SAT). ✨ The following week included an enriching exchange with Biovision’s strategic partner Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT) in Nairobi, Kenya, having meaningful discussions on projects and visionary collaboration. Next, during a warm welcome at PELUM Kenya Association, both organisations gained a comprehensive overview of their current projects on agroecology policy processes. Similarly inspiring was the great introduction to the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT’s work in Kenya. Of course, meeting with icipe’s Director General, 𝗗𝗿. 𝗔𝗯𝗱𝗼𝘂 𝗧𝗲𝗻𝗸𝗼𝘂𝗮𝗻𝗼, his Interim Deputy Director General, Research and Partnerships, Dr. Sunday Ekesi and Grants Manager, 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗵 𝗡𝗷𝘂𝗶𝗵, was an essential part of the visit too. Here’s a glimpse into some of the #moments captured during this trip. These meetings were not only about 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 but also about 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 for sustainable change. With Anders as our new CEO, we are excited to further deepen our partnerships and drive support for agroecology, sustainable food systems, and resilient communities. 🌍 #Agroecology #Partnerships #SustainableDevelopment #FoodSystemsTransformation David Amudavi (BvAT), Janet Maro (SAT), Céline Termote (Bioversity), Rosinah Mbenya (Pelum), Mary Irungu (Pelum)
