Two years ago, the Centre on Armed Groups took its first steps with a simple vision: to rethink how the world engages with armed groups and conflict. Today, that vision has grown into a vibrant reality. In just two years, the Centre has become a global platform, bringing together cutting-edge research, fostering innovative dialogue, and building strong partnerships across borders. Our numbers -- spanning countries, experts, publications, and events -- are a testament to what collaboration can achieve. None of this would have been possible without the incredible support from our Fellows, partners, and advisors. Together, we’re reshaping how we understand and respond to conflict, and we’re just getting started. Here’s to the next chapter -- where the challenges are tough, but the opportunities for impact are even greater! 🚀✨

Centre on Armed Groups hat dies direkt geteilt
🚧 The sixth paper of our Roadblocks and Revenues series, co-published with DIIS - Danish Institute for International Studies and the Centre on Armed Groups, looks at checkpoints, fragmentation, and social differentiation in #Somalia. Drawing on participatory cartography and semi-structured interviews with over 80 Somali road users, the authors find that checkpoints in Somalia, or 'isbaaro' as they are locally called, are deeply embedded in the social fabric of clan society, where the practice of 'abanship' - the brokerage of passage through clan territory - plays a crucial role. This brokerage not only facilitates trade but also reinforces clan identity and social differentiation. Roadblocks in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are more than simple checkpoints — they are sites where public authority is both exercised and performed. The latest working paper from the #RoadblocksAndRevenues project by Judith Verweijen, Kasper Hoffmann and Godefroid Muzalia explores these encounters, shedding light on how everyday interactions at roadblocks shape broader sociopolitical orders. Curious about the routines, power dynamics, and hidden structures at play?
