So much of what was covered in @RolandBerger Consulting's "The European Bicycle Industry in Crisis Mode" 16-page report applies to the cycling accessory market like helmets. Did you read it? Besides that recovery won't come until 2026, Roland Berger summed up in their report what I have been sharing with clients for at least a year. The factors "that will shape the bicycle market for the future," in the report also apply to helmets and accessories. ◾ 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗭𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗬 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗦𝗨𝗣𝗣𝗟𝗬 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗦 Uff. This is one I dedicate most of my energy to. There is so much to be done, and brands need to devote time to analysis and contract highly experienced resources to make the right decisions with the most impact. ◾𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗨𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗔 𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗠 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗨𝗣𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗠 𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗨𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗜𝗡 As component prices rise, we expect manufacturers to find ways to be independent of developing their own components or cooperating with corresponding manufacturers in Asia. Also, by selling products directly to consumers (D2C), better consumer data can be gleaned while margins and excess stock are improved. ◾𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗚 𝗕𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 With so many certification requirements and safety design limitations, the competition lies in branding as competitors exit the playing field. So, while marketing expenses are being cut in the current crisis, it is a mistake to make deep cuts in branding at this point. ◾𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗥𝗦 We are already seeing brands disappear and smaller brands being put under the umbrella of more prominent manufacturers. Unless someone picks up a helmet line spin-off from a manufacturer that does not consider helmets a core product and/or they can self-finance - we won't see new players in our space! The message is clear in Roland Berger's report: We need to gather "the courage to change" immediately. Meanwhile, it is NOT all doom and gloom for helmets. In an SGB Media article, MIPSs gave us some hopeful news: "We achieved growth of 61 percent in the Sports helmet category this quarter, and for the fourth quarter in a row, we delivered growth in the bike sub-category, our largest sub-category," Strandwitz detailed. He said global inventory levels are now healthier than in the unstable years during and just after the pandemic. "However, many retailers are still trying to come to terms with an unfavorable product mix in the Bike category as a whole, but the situation is now far better than during the last two years," he added. I wanted to put a post on my feed so that I never forget what we have been through these last two years. With Taichung Bike Week articles coming out that show hopeful signs of bike industry recovery, the 2023 Year-on-Year results were brutally harsh and many people lost their jobs. Mckinsey says that our industry will grow from $180 Billion to $440 Billion in 2030.
