Why does WHO engagement with Steatotic Liver Disease matter? Check out EASL Study Season 7, Episode 5. Here are the top takeaways from each speaker in the EASL Studio event: 1. Jeffrey V. Lazarus: MASLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease) is the most prevalent liver disease in history, affecting over one-third of adults globally. Raising awareness about the burden of MASLD and MASH is crucial for achieving parity with other major non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. 2. Prof. Shira Zelber Sagi: Public health efforts should focus on shifting the responsibility for liver disease prevention from individuals to society through policies that address social and commercial determinants of health. Early intervention, education, and lifestyle modifications can prevent the progression of liver disease, reducing the burden on healthcare systems and improving patient outcomes. 3. Mazen Noureddin, MD, MHSc: Effective policies are needed to diagnose patients early, connect them to appropriate care, and support community-level interventions. The approval of new pharmacological treatments for MASH with advanced fibrosis in 2024 represents a significant step forward, and more treatments are expected to follow, but policy implementation is key to success. 4. Kremlin Wickramasinghe: Prevention policies addressing obesity, nutrition, and physical activity are as relevant for liver diseases like MASLD and MASH as they are for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Global collaboration, data collection, and advocacy from clinicians are essential for raising awareness and integrating liver disease into existing public health frameworks.
