💡 An IE4 induction motor has a lower life cycle impact than an IE3 motor 💡 When looking at entire electrical system, taking not only the motor itself into account, but also the generation capacity associated with the energy losses, the life cycle impact of an IE4 motor is lower than the impact of its IE3 equivalent. This was demonstrated in a design exercise and #lifecycleassessment (LCA) by the International Copper Association Europe and University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra) INSTITUTO DE SISTEMAS E ROBÓTICA - ISR The calculation was made for an 11 kW motor with 1,750 h/y full load equivalent. For the generation capacity, the electricity mix as predicted by the European Commission #GreenDeal Impact Assessment was considered (https://lnkd.in/gA8d6jHD), and the #lifecycle impact for each type of generation capacity was taken from the UNECE Sustainable Energy Integrated Life-cycle Assessment of Electricity Sources (https://lnkd.in/gnfjp_B5). The #LCA results demonstrate that the IE4 motor is favourable for all the LCA impact categories, including climate change and fossil fuel use, and both for an aluminium rotor motor and for a #copper rotor motor. The results of this research were presented at CWIEME Events (Coil Winding, Insulation, & Electrical Manufacturing Exhibition) in May 2024 and at eemods'24 in September 2024. #electricmotor Ladji Tikana Luigi Ulli Daniel Eberli Alexandra da Fonte Martins Rita Werle Andrea Vezzini
