I feel so privileged to have presented at the European Society for Health and Medical Sociology conference as part of the Going Graphic session – all on developments in Graphic Medicine. My preliminary review suggests that mindfulness theories could significantly contribute to the current conversation around empathy & health narratives. With my poster, I also used comics to convey what I've learned. I have Prof. Baldwin Van Gorp to thank for much-needed feedback on my ideas... and for asking the right questions at the right time. During the same session, researchers from the University of Bologna presented their graphic novel on the Italian body donation process (that resulted in the beautiful "Il Primo Paziente" by Stefano Ratti, Veronica Moretti & team). After that, Ana Patricia Hilario & Joana Maria Mendonça from the University of Lisbon addressed vaccine hesitancy in Portugese consultation rooms with a comics pocket book. Finally, stefania fucci & team demonstrated how children in hospitals can communicate experiences of pain and discomfort by drawing "body maps". The conference as a whole was riveting. Especially the keynote speech by Prof. Stephani Hatch gave me such a sense of hope. That, and to see such a large, lively community using the tools offered by the humanities to engage with questions around health & well-being.

Throwback to 5+ years of research on cognitive ageing in the CRISP project funded by the European Research Council (ERC). We recently celebrated the closing of CRISP with the team and colleagues at the University of Luxembourg. Lots to celebrate further as our work was awarded the Excellence Prize of the European Society for Health and Medical Sociology for our paper led by Ariane Bertogg, published in the European Journal of Ageing (https://lnkd.in/ek3SKN3A). We are continuing to work on the social determinants of health and disease with a focus on ageing. Among the recent publications coming out of CRISP, we found - Associations between socioeconomic status and cognitive functioning in The Maastricht Study, but little mediation by structural brain damage and connectivity, congratulations to lead author Anouk Geraets https://lnkd.in/ePA-5uqU - Differences in dementia risk burden between women and men in a lower-educated sample from Brazil, with women overall reporting lower education, similar disease burden and less smoking and alcohol consumption, and reaching the threshold to cognitive impairment earlier then men. Lead author Fabiana Ribeiro https://lnkd.in/erA6xamq - Cohort gains in cognitive performance in later middle adulthood and older age across 12 European countries 2007-2017, with improvements predominantly at the upper end of the performance distribution for delayed recall and verbal fluency, with lead author Johan Rehnberg https://lnkd.in/eXbVzhs3

She was awarded the prize for the paper, "Gendered life courses and cognitive functioning in later life: the role of context-specific gender norms and lifetime employment." The article was published in 2023 in the European Journal of Ageing and was co-authored by Anja Leist. This paper was selected from 25 great articles in health sociology submitted for the competition. The article showed innovative conceptual and methodological approaches to establishing how employment biographies were associated with both men's and women's cognitive functioning in later life.
