Our new paper was published today in the European Journal of Public Health EUPHA - European Public Health Association on the health perceptions of adverse weather in older adults (aged 65+) in England: analysis of 2019/20 survey data! The findings from this analysis have been incorporated in the UK Health Security Agency Adverse Weather and Health Plan. Thanks to all my co-authors for your help on this project! NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London Key messages from the paper: ◼ Less than half of older adults in this study perceive hot or cold weather as a risk to their health. ◼ Regional differences in health risk perception in older adults in hot weather and demographic predictors of cold weather being a risk to health were income, education, and home ownership. ◼ Key temperature-related behaviours associated with perceiving health as at risk in hot or cold weather were related to home modifications and adjusting daily activity. ◼ Persistent barriers to recognizing health risk in older adults include self-identification of vulnerability, stoicism, terminology, awareness of health risks, and cultural norms. ◼ Importance of these findings for aiding public health agencies to target and modify temperature-related risk communication strategies and health messaging to engage older adults.

🌍Great news for our #planet and our #health! The Council of the European Union has adopted a directive for updated #AirQuality standards across the #EU—a major step towards eliminating premature deaths due to #AirPollution, making a difference to hundreds of millions across the EU and beyond. The directive aligns EU ambient air quality standards more closely with WHO Guidelines on Air Quality. Reducing air pollution helps reduce: 🩹ischaemic heart disease 🩹stroke 🩹lung cancer 🩹asthma 🩹chronic obstructive pulmonary disease Very importantly, many of the policies that reduce air pollution also help mitigate #ClimateChange by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases: a great example of how we can harvest double dividends and co-benefits for #health and the #environment through air pollution reduction policies. By creating a 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀, we can enhance workforce mobility, reduce skills shortages, and increase cost-efficiency in the health sector. This would not only reinforce the resilience of our public health systems but also 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲—key elements for a competitive, future-proof single market. EUPHA was honored to take part in the Roundtable Session on the EU4Health Programme during the European Week of Regions and Cities on October 7th. Our Executive Director, Charlotte Marchandise, emphasized the importance of building bridges between local, regional, and national communities to effectively realize the EU's health ambitions - and improve the physical and mental health and weel-being of all Europeans, leaving no one behind. To make a real difference, we need to empower local actors, where the levers are located. She also underscored the critical return on investment in Public health, stressing that health is not a cost, it's an investment.
