Last year, the Government of India announced the launch of its long-awaited One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) scheme – a $750m initiative aimed at increasing access to research for millions of scholars across the country. This Thursday, 20 March at 11:30 CET, Research Information is hosting the “One Nation, One Subscription – Many Opinions” webcast, sponsored by Frontiers. In this live webcast, guest speakers will be discussing what librarians, publishers, and researchers need to know about the ground-breaking scheme – as well as the wider ramifications for the country’s scientific community and those in the rest of the Global South. Among the speakers are those with a deep knowledge of scholarly communications in India, including: Dr Vivek Mehra (PhD), Founder and CEO, Vikramshila Education Nidhi Gulati, Country Communications Director, Springer Nature Professor Ramesh C Gaur, Professor and Dean, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts Anindita Bhadra, Professor of Biology, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata Register now to join this free webcast: https://fro.ntiers.in/neR5

Researchers know best where their work should be published, based on the value of services provided by the publisher and journal impact. National rating agencies that offer journal evaluation guidance to researchers have a responsibility to follow through on their mission and provide transparent and objective assessment criteria on a journal-by-journal basis. Relying solely on a publisher’s business model to assess editorial quality and research risks making arbitrary decisions that limit author options and ultimately impede scientific progress. Frontiers’ Chief Executive Editor Frederick Fenter explores this more in a recent Khrono piece (available in Norwegian): https://fro.ntiers.in/hWwC

An article in Research Professional News by John Porter highlights a critical issue affecting the academic community: the impact of blanket sanctions on journals based on their business models. Porter explains that such sanctions, like those imposed by the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies (JUFO), can hinder the development of researchers, especially early-career academics. By downgrading open access journals en masse, without clear, measurable criteria, we risk limiting valuable opportunities for learning and professional growth. It’s therefore essential to evaluate journals based on their quality and contribution to science, rather than their business model. https://fro.ntiers.in/ZuaZ
