A new study published in the Open Access journal Technologies MDPI shows novel technology that could effectively diminish fires. In the study, researchers from The Ohio State University test several prototypes that generate vortex rings - turbulent rings of air which have previously been shown to successfully extinguish fires in enclosed spaces. The researchers found that the prototype which generated the vortex rings using compressed air was the most effective at suppressing fires, with a range of up to 1.98 metres. The development of effective firefighting tools is much needed to reduce the significant strain on water and energy resources used by current firefighting strategies. All articles in Acoustics MDPI (ISSN 2624-599X) Vol 6, Issue 4, are now freely available to access, read and download: https://brnw.ch/21wRgVC COVER STORY: Fostering optimal acoustical quality in learning spaces is vital, particularly for hearing aid users. Virtual reality (VR) offers a practical solution for assessing perceived room acoustics when in-field evaluations are not feasible. A cost-effective VR system, designed for easy replication in small, non-anechoic spaces, has been proposed by a group of Italian researchers, consisting of a 16-speaker array synchronized with a VR headset. Validations comparing room acoustics parameters between a real lecture room and its VR reproduction, alongside feedback via the Igroup Presence Questionnaire from subjects experiencing a class through the VR lecture room reproduction, confirm the system’s suitability for predicting perceived acoustical quality, supporting its use in inclusive and efficient design processes.
