📣 #NHRIs have voted to stand firm for #GenderEquality and the rights of women & girls, in the face of global pushbacks. Last Wednesday, more than 90 NHRIs adopted a powerful closing statement at the #GANHRI2025 Annual Conference that emphasized their critical role in monitoring, reporting, complaint handling, and public awareness to: - Respond to gender-based violence, - Promote access to justice for women, - Lead on legal and policy reforms, - Uphold educational rights for girls. Importantly, all institutions committed to ensuring pluralism and gender inclusion within their own composition and operations. Thank you, merci, gracias, شكراً to all +300 participants who inspired and encouraged us with their committed work for #GenderEquality and #HumanRights. We look forward to supporting you and continuing our collaboration in 2025. 📷 Photos of the event: https://bit.ly/4iPu4tQ 🔗 More information: https://bit.ly/3FqKPxo Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions European Network of National Human Rights Institutions RINDHCA América Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) United Nations Human Rights European Commission

At the GANHRI (Global Alliance Of National Human Rights Institutions), I underscored the importance of upholding gender equality at a time when human rights are under growing pressure. Across all regions, we see attempts to undermine and redefine rights. Women’s rights have always been a story of ebbs and flows - progress and setbacks. While it has not been a straight path, there has been progress overall. And the setbacks are temporary, because no one can turn back the clock on gender equality and the rights of women and girls. What is clear is that we cannot take anything for granted and must never be complacent. Women and girls face violence including: online, restrictions on reproductive rights, and resurgent toxic ideas about masculinity. The gender data gap persists, as women are still largely overlooked in science, healthcare and the development of new technologies. Women with disabilities, women of African descent, Indigenous women, and other minorities face even greater disparities. Despite this, women human rights defenders have remained steadfast in pushing for gender equality for women everywhere. So much of the progress on women’s rights has been due to mobilisation at the national level. The duty to promote and protect women’s rights rests with States, but national human rights institutions (NHRIs) play a critical role in holding governments accountable, strengthening legal and policy frameworks, and advocating for full gender parity. National institutions can also lead by example - setting a high standard of gender parity and ensuring equal representation in their own ranks. My Office welcomes the pledges made by 16 NHRIs under the Human Rights 75 Initiative and will continue to support their implementation.
