🏘️ Localizing Multilateralism: LRGs & Human Rights 🌍 ✅ On Monday, 17 March we co-organized the HRC side event "Local and Regional Governments as Key Actors in Advancing Human Rights and the SDGs". 📚 It was the occasion to launch the Academy Briefing "Localizing Multilateralism: The Role of Local and Regional Governments in Advancing Human Rights and Sustainable Development Goals", co-authored by Domenico Zipoli, Kamelia Kemileva and Ludovica Chiussi Curzi. Key highlights of the discussion: 🗝️ LRGs deliver essential services that allow residents to exerce their rights - but they often lack training and resources to navigate international human rights obligations 🗝️ There is a pressing need for LRGs to be incorporated into international human rights mechanisms that often overlook them 🗝️ Increasing data and research to monitor and review human rights at the local level is essential to ensure international human right treaties are effectively implemented 🔗 Read more about the event ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eX8_bm2Q 🔗 Read the publication ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eHTwS_Ai Thank you to the co-organizers of the side event: Permanent Mission of Italy, Permanent Mission of Paraguay, Geneva Human Rights Platform, United Nations Human Rights. #humanrights #SDGs #cities #localizing #newpublication #LRGs

🚀 Strengthening Local Action for Global Impact 🌍🏙️ We are proud to have co-organized the Human Rights Council side event on Local and Regional Governments as Key Actors in Advancing Human Rights and the SDGs. It was also the launch of the new Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Briefing 'Localizing Multilateralism: The Role of Local and Regional Governments in Advancing Human Rights and Sustainable Development'. Read the Briefing here: https://lnkd.in/ebFymSG4 A huge thank you to our partners—the Permanent Missions of Italy and Paraguay, United Nations Human Rights - OHCHR, Global Cities Hub, and the Università di Bologna’s Department of Legal Studies (Dipartimento di Scienze giuridiche - Università di Bologna) — for making this discussion possible. Key takeaways from our discussion: 📌 LRGs are not just service providers—they are human rights actors. They must be fully integrated into national and UN human rights reporting frameworks, including NMIRF activities. 📌 Stronger digital infrastructure and AI-driven tools can empower LRGs to enhance data collection, track human rights progress, and contribute to global monitoring systems. 📌 Coordinated multilevel governance is essential—bridging the gap between local realities and international accountability. A special thanks to co-authors Domenico Zipoli, Kamelia Kemileva and Ludovica Chiussi Curzi for an Academy Briefing that we hope will serve as a call to action for a more thorough engagement of LRGs in human rights governance.
