"How many times have you asked your child, 'What do you think about climate change?'” This was the question posed by Júlia Bonitese, an 11-year-old Brazilian Children’s Ambassador for Climate Justice and Environmental Activist, at the closing of the ICLEI World Congress 2024 last June in São Paulo, Brazil. She continued: “If adults see us as agents of change, start by including us in the conversation and decision-making. Let's work together toward a less consumerist and more sustainable future — across all generations. Otherwise, we are all contributing to our own extinction." Today, we highlight Júlia's timely message as we celebrate #WorldHabitatDay. Under the theme "Engaging Youth to Create a Better Urban Future," this day reminds us that as our world rapidly urbanizes, cities are becoming home to a new generation of leaders and changemakers. As stated today by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, "Let us support youth everywhere, include young people in decision-making, and build cities where people of all ages can thrive." #ICLEI joins the UN's call to action, urging the next generation to step up and lead, as they are the driving force behind sustainable urban development. Júlia is the founder of Pequenos Protetores do Planeta, an initiative to unite youth across Brazil to protect its rich biodiversity, especially the Amazon region, and she attended ICLEI’s World Congress to amplify the voice of youth in #ClimateAction. How can cities unlock the funding needed for transformative climate projects? Accessing finance is essential for urban initiatives, but the challenge often lies in getting projects ready for investment. That's where Project Preparation Facilities (PPFs) come in. They play a vital role in helping cities structure their projects to attract the financing they need to turn their climate ambitions into reality. PPFs help prepare #UrbanProjects for investment by addressing four key areas of support: 1️⃣ Capacity building and technical assistance 2️⃣ Project structuring and risk mitigation 3️⃣ Facilitating access to finance 4️⃣ Promoting sustainability and inclusivity Read this blog via UrbanShift and co-authored by #ICLEI, World Resources Institute, Climate Policy Initiative, C40 Cities, and WRI Brasil to explore how PPFs can help cities unlock urban finance, including case studies from five global PPFs. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eUvd-rGE John-Rob Pool, Eillie Anzilotti, Francisco Martes Porto Macedo, Jessy Appavoo, André da Vila, Bruno Hernandez Incau

"Combatting climate change means placing cities at the center," write ICLEI President Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, Mayor of Malmö, Sweden, and ICLEI First Vice President Minna Arve, Mayor of Turku, Finland, in a joint article. Published by FORESIGHT Climate & Energy, #ICLEI leaders challenge the notion that cities are merely contributors to #ClimateChange. Instead, they position urban centers as crucial allies in our battle against the #ClimateEmergency. While cities account for 70% of global CO2 emissions, they're also at the forefront of innovative #ClimateSolutions. The mayors argue that as national governments falter, cities are stepping up with practical, sustainable approaches. However, they face a significant hurdle: only 10-15% of global #ClimateFinance reaches the local level. Despite this, cities remain resolute. "Just give us the means and we shall deliver a fairer and greener future," they declare. Read the full article here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eT6yTj3G Malmö stad, Turun kaupunki - Åbo stad - City of Turku
