DeepSeek’s meteoric rise to the top of the AI assistant charts has been slowed somewhat by a large-scale cyber attack, which temporarily halted new registrations. Ilia Kolochenko, PhD, CEO and Chief Architect of ImmuniWeb, comments the news for CPO Magazine: “Talking about nation-state-sponsored cyber-attacks, it is somewhat challenging to imagine geopolitical rivals of China deploying such strategically primitive techniques, which will highly unlikely have any long-term impact on DeepSeek, instead creating free publicity for it. Involvement of hacktivists is remotely possible, but we cannot clearly see here any usual motives of hacktivist groups – such as politics or military conflicts – behind attacking DeepSeek. A formal investigation report by DeepSeek will likely bring clarity about the incident. Most importantly, this incident indicates that while many corporations and investors are obsessed with the ballooning AI hype, we still fail to address foundational cybersecurity issues despite having access to allegedly super-powerful GenAI technologies. An overall disappointment in GenAI technologies is possible in 2025.” #cybersecurity #cybercrime #artificialintelligence #cyberattack #AIassistant https://lnkd.in/ePvViZUk

Connecticut-based healthcare provider Community Health Center has disclosed a data breach impacting more than a million patients following a successful attack by unknown threat actors who gained access to its networks. Ilia Kolochenko, PhD, CEO and Chief Architect of ImmuniWeb, comments the news for Forbes: “Healthcare will probably be the most desirable target for ransomware groups in 2025 for three key reasons: First is funding, with most healthcare organizations surviving mostly thanks to governmental subsidies or charity donations. This makes healthcare institutions a low-hanging fruit for unscrupulous cybercriminals, who are unwilling to spend a lot of time and effort to pierce multilayered cyber defense of, say, wealthy financial institutions. Then there’s the more likely to pay weakness that is introduced by the very nature of the business these organizations are in, where human life is more important than money. Knowing this ransomware groups usually start with a six- or even seven-digit bid, then significantly reduce it to something that the victim can pay, naively believing that it got a great deal. And finally, healthcare providers can handle very sensitive data of politicians, celebrities and wealthy executives, making attacks against healthcare unprecedently lucrative compared to most other sectors.” #cybersecurity #cybercrime #databreach #privacy #ransomware https://lnkd.in/eSAPiqhR

Better risk management could lead to reduced premiums on top of value for money, making cyberinsurance a silent driver for improved cybersecurity. Ilia Kolochenko, PhD, CEO and Chief Architect of ImmuniWeb, comments for SecurityWeek Cyber Insights 2025: “The majority of existing cybersecurity insurance contracts do not expressly address the novel spectrum of risks, threats and attack vectors caused by rapid proliferation of gen-AI and third party incidents. Consider the notorious CrowdStrike outage, which was classified as a non-cybersecurity event by most cybersecurity insurances, eventually denying coverage. While from technical and legal viewpoints such classification is arguably correct, it certainly does not reflect reasonable expectations of insured companies.” #cybersecurity #cyberinsurance #cybercrime #riskmanagement https://lnkd.in/e-QETsV5

The Chinese AI platform DeepSeek has disabled registrations on its DeepSeek-V3 chat platform due to an ongoing "large-scale" cyber-attack targeting its services. Ilia Kolochenko, PhD, CEO and Chief Architect of ImmuniWeb, comments the news for SC Media UK: “It is not completely excluded that DeepSeek simply could not handle the legitimate user traffic due to insufficiently scalable IT infrastructure, while presenting this unforeseen IT outage as a cyber-attack.
