🐋43 new Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) were recently approved in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean and Wider Caribbean. These new IMMAs spotlight critical habitats for threatened #marine species including sperm whales, manatees & polar bears. IMMAs are defined as discrete portions of habitat, important to marine mammal species, that have the potential to be delineated and managed for conservation. They are not legal designations but independent, peer-reviewed assessments based on criteria supported by the best data. Globally, there are now 323 IMMAs. To date, 79% of the world ocean has been examined for IMMAs, with IMMAs comprising nearly 18% of the surface area. Learn more https://bit.ly/41Z43BC

Invasive alien species (IAS) are one of the biggest causes of biodiversity loss and species extinctions, and #ClimateChange compounds the problem. Climate change facilitates the establishment and spread of many alien species and creates new opportunities for them to become invasive. They reduce the resilience of natural habitats, agricultural systems, and urban areas to climate change. It is essential that IAS be incorporated into climate change policies. Some great news, after a 100-year absence the endangered Polynesian storm-petrel has returned to Kamaka Island, French Polynesia. The success is thanks to a restoration project by Société d’Ornithologie de Polynésie, funded by the Best 2.0+ Programme, an IUCN-led initiative funded by the EU. The project employed an innovative method involving the application of “rodenticide” pesticides via drones, a pioneering endeavour in French Polynesia. By removing rats, the project contributed to the conservation of rare seabird species, such as the Polynesian Storm-petrel (Nesofregetta fuliginosa) and many other indigenous species of the island.
