💰 $1 trillion. That’s the value of food we waste or throw away every year.🗑🥑🥝🥓 An alarming ONE-THIRD of all food produced. Not surprisingly, this leaves a mark on our greenhouse gas footprint. Food loss and waste contribute 8-10 percent of global emissions while worsening food insecurity, which is already exacerbated by the climate crisis. It's another powerful example of why national climate plans must be economy-wide—taking all industries, supply chains, and actors into account. To build stronger, more resilient communities and economies and protect the most vulnerable. #NoFoodWaste #FLWday #RecipeofChange

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
Info
With 197 Parties, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has near universal membership and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep a global average temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.

Ambitious national climate plans have a massive potential to unlock economic growth, better health, more jobs and development. If done well: ✅ covering ambitious emission reduction targets for all greenhouse gases ✅ covering all sectors of the economy ✅ underpinned by reliable policies, regulations and finance to ensure implementation these plans are powerful blueprints for stronger economies and societies. Listen to UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell explain in the #NewYorkClimateWeek episode of the Outrage + Optimism podcast - starting at minute 13:42 👂 https://bit.ly/4gz6eT7

A new report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) shows that by tripling renewables and doubling energy efficiency by 2030, we could reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 10 BILLION tonnes—giving the world a fighting chance to contain global warming. What’s more, we could cut global energy costs by almost 10% 💸 and strengthen energy security for everyone. To unlock these benefits, countries must deliver: ✅ 25 million km of new or modernized grids ✅ 1,500 GW of energy storage Bold new national climate plans – due from all governments early next year – will be key. Climate, biodiversity, and land—all three sustain life on Earth. 🌍 🌳🌲🌴Take forests, for example: Healthy forests are home to wildlife and pollinators, nurture fertile soils, provide clean water, store carbon, and shield communities from extreme droughts and floods. This year, at three major UN COP conferences, by UN Climate Change, UN Biodiversity and UN Convention to Combat Desertification, the world will come together to decide how to protect our climate, biodiversity, and land. 2024 must be the year we scale up ambition and action – for people and nature. Cities, towns, states, and regions are hubs for innovative, real-world solutions. Take #Liverpool for example. As the world’s first “Accelerator City” for climate action, they have taken impressive measures to rapidly decarbonise the live music and TV/Film production sectors – both vital parts of the city’s economy. Local and regional levels of government - being so closely connected with their communities - are fantastically placed to ensure bolder climate action is effective and inclusive, with everyone having a voice. Local governments also have direct knowledge of exactly what is needed, where exactly it is needed, and how it can be feasible. All while having the power and critical mass to attract investment. Regional and local leaders are key in building a greener, more resilient, more prosperous world for us all. Their role in helping national governments develop stronger national climate plans is essential.

Bold climate action will bring about the greatest global transformations of our age. There is a catch. If we are not careful, we risk a dangerous two-speed global transition taking hold. In the faster lanes, businesses, governments and peoples in the well-capitalized global north will reap huge benefits in terms of economic growth, jobs, less pollution, better health and more secure and affordable energy. In stark contrast, many vulnerable developing countries are held back by sky-high costs of capital and spiraling debt crises. Their peoples are missing out on the vast benefits of bolder climate action. The injustice and imbalance is not only unacceptable, it is self-defeating - for every economy. We risk missing our crucial goal to halve emissions by 2030 and seeing climate impacts cause increasing damage to our interdependent global supply chains. In a two-speed global transition, ultimately everyone loses, and loses badly, including every G20 economy.

AI, satellite observations and immersive technologies hold immense potential to boost progress on climate action. 🚀 If we: 💚 enhance the quality, availability, accessibility, and interoperability of data 💚 boost investments in and access to emerging science, technology and innovation 💚 scale up education, training and capacity development, particularly in developing countries we can ensure that the benefits of natural and social sciences, technologies and innovations are accessible to all.
