Unlock the power of optical frequency combs

Info

K2 Photonics designs and produces a revolutionary new type of ultrafast laser called the dual-comb laser. Unlike traditional lasers, our dual-comb laser produces two highly precise lasers from nearly the same components as a single laser. These lasers produce ultrafast pulses with nearly identical optical frequencies, but with a controllable difference in pulse repetition rates. Our unique single-laser design gives our dual-comb light an unprecedented level of stability and precision, while still remaining cost-effective. This opens up a wide range of new applications beyond the high-end metrology and science deployments of traditional lasers. Our dual-comb lasers are ideal for applications such as precise thickness and distance measurements in semiconductors, optical, and automotive production. They enable tight tolerance and quality control of thin layers of novel materials, which is crucial for economic growth in these industries

Why buy a comb when you can get a dual comb?

Ultrafast lasers start travelling #ultrafast. Instead of overpacking in layers of boxes, K2 Photonics went with a leaner method. Our lasers undergo vibration and drop testing before shipment, so we know they are ready for the unpredictable events in their journey. Pictured here is our high-power dual-comb laser system with harmonic modules and K2-Link electronics package, all securely packed together. The best part? The size and weight fit well for cost-effective express delivery, meaning customers in Europe can receive their systems within 24 hours, with other global destinations just 1-2 days away. As our stock and capabilities grow, next day ultrafast system delivery might be a reality. Next step? Make this even smaller!

New publication + PhD graduation --------------------------------------------------   After many screws were turned left and right, our work on high-sensitivity dual-comb spectroscopy has been published today in Nature Communications.   You can read the publication to find out how we used a tunable dual-comb optical parametric oscillator as both a light source and a detector to achieve high-sensitivity spectroscopy measurements in the mid-infrared. In a proof-of-concept measurement, we could detect ambient methane (2 ppm) within milliseconds of measurement time.   Journal article: https://lnkd.in/dF7HqNh7.   A more approachable summary of the article can be found in this ETH DPHYS news item: https://lnkd.in/ddthD68Q   This publication includes the final results of the research I conducted during my PhD in the Ultrafast Laser Physics group of Prof. Ursula Keller at ETH, which I happily defended in April this year. After some time off, new projects and ideas are waiting to be realized and now I'm back at the optical table to further explore the potential of this type of system.   Foto 1: Kilian Kessler/ETH

Why buy a comb when you can get a dual comb?

What a wonderful surprise at #EOSAM2024 to see Prof. Birgitta Bernhardt presenting the latest findings in UV dual-comb spectroscopy using our 1 GHz dual-comb laser. This truly made my day! I'm happy to see how K2 Photonics single-cavity dual-comb laser technology is advancing research by: (1) Accelerating results with as-promised turn-key performance and high mutual coherence. (2) Enhancing measurement sensitivity and temporal resolution with a 1 GHz laser repetition rate. (3) Facilitating efficient wavelength conversion to important spectral regions thanks to the high-power capability of the oscillator. Huge congratulations to the Coherent Sensing team at Technische Universität Graz. I’m excited to read the upcoming paper! 😉 #ultrafast #dualcomb #gassensing

Why buy a comb when you can get a dual comb?

Our K2 Photonics journey with single-cavity dual-comb lasers is guided by feedback from our collaborators, early adopters and our own first hand application experience. By now I have seen quite a few proof-of-concept demonstrations in sensing, NDT, and metrology using these lasers. What really stood out for me was how these lasers reduce friction and accelerate application development. Less hardware, more software seems to be the way to go #ultrafast. Single-cavity dual-comb lasers deliver precisely this offering and one needs to work hard to match the performance. This indirect, yet deep value of the new technology wasn't obvious at the start and it seems to have emerged from the choice of the high-performance laser technology platform itself, which further expands the versatility of our offering. There is still lots to do and I am glad that there are strong scientific and engineering communities exploring exciting applications with this emerging laser technology.
