"Louis I. Kahn: The Last Notebook" in Design Considered #09 by Nolan Giles – your summer reading sorted ☀️

Profil von Nolan Giles anzeigen, Grafik

    Brand & Content Strategist

Summer reading recommendations from Design Considered #09. As Europe heats up, it might be a good time to reduce screen time (after finishing this newsletter) and head to the beach, park, or any sunny spot with a stack of good reading material. As we highlighted in last week’s design round-up, Santa & Cole are masters of lighting. What better way to complement the warm glow of the Spanish brand’s lamps than with finely designed books to read beneath them? The company publishes numerous books, and the 2024 editions of its titles on design masters (1) Arne Jacobsen and (2) Miguel Milá (the creator of several Santa & Cole classics) are perfect choices for your bedside table. Self-publishing isn’t easy, so we should recognise the efforts of photographer Benedict Redgrove, whose (3) Auto Photo Manual has raised nearly a third of its six-figure target on Kickstarter. The best-looking book of the summer might not be strictly about design. Still, Belmond’s (4) Liguria, produced by Apartamento and featuring wonderful photography by Laura Jane Coulson, is a visual feast. Finally, Louis Kahn’s significant work in the United States is beautifully showcased in a new publication of his imaginative and emotionally potent sketches and writings, (5) Louis I. Kahn: The Last Notebook from Lars Müller Publishers. It wonderfully highlights his creative process, with a special emphasis on the masterful Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park in New York, finished in 2012, decades after his death. https://lnkd.in/evF4Ab4F

"Louis I. Kahn: The Last Notebook" by Sue Ann Kahn (ed.) is featured in The New York Times Critics Notebook ❤️ "On its own, the recreated sketchbook — which duplicates the original’s trim size, color, trace paper, (many) empty pages, and even a small smear of ink on the cover — delivers an intimate reflection of, and connection to, an architect who could embed physical objects with deep feeling; carving out space, light and spirit. […] The grace and clarity of his images and thoughts are amplified by the accuracy and tactility of the facsimile." Iwan Baan's new photography book "Rome – Las Vegas: Bread and Circuses" is out now! Whereas the former capital of the Roman Empire is perceived as ancient, proper, and eternal, Sin City is described as flashy, vulgar, and fake. Yet, both find themselves historically and presently at the intersection of power and play. Released over fifty years after Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi’s groundbreaking architectural study “Learning From Las Vegas” (1972), Baan's book centers on two iconic cities to contrast and subvert common perceptions of authenticity and artificiality and ultimately questions such bipolar distinctions. “In 1970, the socialist Salvador Allende became president of Chile. A broad alliance called Unidad Popular, composed of most of the Chilean left and center-left, backed his candidacy. Their plan was ambitious: to establish a truly democratic, socialist society in a country plagued with deep inequality of all kinds. The project relied in no small part on helping its participants, all Chilean citizens, to envision a different kind of life and country for themselves. In ‘How to Design a Revolution: The Chilean Road to Design’ (Lars Müller Publishers, 2024), editors Hugo Palmarola, Eden Medina, and Pedro Ignacio Alonso analyze the everyday items designed and mass-produced in this new era that promised prosperity, as well as the iconography used by Unidad Popular to foment the idea of a modern, more egalitarian Chilean society. While such a society did not come to be—Allende was deposed by a US-backed military coup in 1973—the attempt at it yielded lasting insights, both about design and about government.” Polina Godz sits down with Eden Medina, Hugo Palmarola, and Pedro Alonso for a conversation on Chilean design and its relationship to socialism in NYRA #40.

A short and sweet summary of our facsimile edition "Modern Man in the Making" by Otto Neurath is now up on the fantastic platform Design Reviewed:

Profil von Matt Lamont anzeigen, Grafik

Designer | Collector and Educator on Graphic Design History

Otto Neurath’s Pioneering Book. Modern Man in the Making The book “Modern Man In The Making” (1939), is a fantastic example of Neurath’s work. The book uses Isotype’s principles with text to illustrate complex societal issues like globalisation and war’s impact on economies, prioritising visual recognition through symbols to aid in memorability—a philosophy that remains paramount in design today. https://lnkd.in/en5ebav8 #ottoneurath #dataviz #infographics #designbooks Lars Mueller Lars Müller Publishers
