The iconic Notre Dame Cathedral's construction began in the year 1163 and was mostly completed by 1270. As the building was built notably before any technological advancements and complex sound systems, the acoustics of the prestigious building are fascinating to explore from an architectural and cultural standpoint. An article published in the Open Access journal Heritage MDPI and cited by BBC Future explores this aspect of the gothic masterpiece. The authors describe the audibility and intelligibility of the spoken voice inside the cathedral, which was essential for the key religious practices that took place within the building, such as preaching.
