Curator Jenn Ellis explains why she chose Naminapu Maymuru-White to be featured at the Breguet stand at Frieze London "...because of her emphasis on storytelling and ancestry. Her bark paintings narrate the tale of her ancestors, how they travel in a river leading up to skies and are seen in the stars, the Milky Way, looking over us. Each artwork isn’t ‘just’ an artwork, it's a spiritual tale about connection and collective humanity". Journey through the stars in the work of Naminapu Maymuru-White. A member of the Maŋgalili clan based in Yirrkala, Australia, the artist’s work is presented in ‘River of Stars’, the latest chapter of curator @jenncellis’s collaboration for Breguet. One of the first Yolŋu women to be taught the sacred design of her people, Maymuru-White’s work tells epic origin stories. In the Breguet Lounge, a multi-part bark piece and installation relates a journey of death and rebirth. Its timelessness, painstaking process and narrative of the heavens all speak to what Ellis calls Breguet’s tradition of ‘history, storytelling and the celestial’. Maymuru-White’s work is also presented in the main exhibition of the 60th Venice Biennale and will be included in the National Gallery of Australia’s 2025 Indigenous Triennale, curated by @tonyalbert.
