RTO mandates remind me of a (jaw dropping?) event that I witnessed in the early 2000s. I was at a meeting where a high profile tech investor said that his company (that he controlled) would not be investing in eBay because not only was the CEO a woman, but the management was full of women. Does your jaw drop? Yes, he did say that. His attitude reminds me of the attitude that I suspect is behind many RTO mandates: resisting societal change. And not just any change, but change that has the potential to empower organizations and individuals: - organizations by providing access to more diversity and therefore increased problem solving capabilities and innovation potential, and helping them reduce their environmental footprint - individuals by providing more options in how to conduct their life and reach their full potential in various life domains This applies to gender diversity just as much as to hybrid work. And hybrid work supports not only gender diversity but also a diversity of people from different locations, and of people with different lifestyles and different personalities. Decision makers who call for a RTO may have a hidden business agenda such as reducing headcount. But even this is difficult to understand as those leaving will tend to be the best performers for whom it is easy to find another position. Those decision makers display indifference towards mothers and fathers, introverts, neurodiverse people and people with disabilities, as well as the environment. Instead of making an effort to make hybrid work and allow their organization to profit from its advantages they choose to be on the wrong side of history.
