A man whose right hand was amputated at the age of 20 is now able to feel the temperature of the objects he touches with his prosthetic hand, thanks to a new device integrated in it. The device, called MiniTouch, was developed by researchers at EPFL and the School of Advanced Studies Sant'Anna in Pisa. It is made by two components, an active thermal sensor which measures temperature and generates realistic signals which are then sent to the second component, a thermal stimulator. In the international CYBATHLON competition, people with disabilities undertake routine tasks with the support of assistive technology that can be seamlessly integrated into everyday life. Today, we feature three ETH Zürich teams—RSL (Robotic Systems Lab) in the Assistance Robot Race, Sight Guide in the Vision Assistance Race, and NeuroLegs (Neuroengineering Lab) in the LEG Prosthesis Race—that will test their innovative solutions at CYBATHLON 2024 this month. The countdown for the CYBATHLON 2024 has begun. 🏆 From 25 to 27 October 2024, the third edition of ETH Zürich's non-profit project will bring the future of #assistivetechnology to life. In a global format, teams of technology developers from academia and industry, alongside people with physical disabilities, will compete against each other in Kloten, near Zurich, and at local hubs worldwide. They will tackle a variety of day-to-day challenges in a unique competition using self-developed, cutting-edge assistive technologies.
