At CYBATHLON 2024, teams from around the world brought cutting-edge arm prostheses designed to push the boundaries of assistive technology. From advanced myoelectric devices to body-powered and hybrid models, each prosthesis featured unique capabilities, allowing pilots to take on everyday tasks like carrying bottles, serving food, stacking, hammering a nail, fixing a light bulb, hanging laundry, and tackling the hot wire. These incredible demonstrations highlight the advancements made in assistive technology, fostering greater independence for people with arm prostheses. Hats off to our innovative teams and their inspiring pilots! CYBATHLON hat dies direkt geteilt
The CYBATHLON 2024 has been an extraordinary journey for the Smart Arm Team, marking five years of dedicated innovation and teamwork. Starting in 2019 with pilot Christophe Huchet in the ARM race, our team grew in 2023 with Etienne Moullet joining as pilot for the ROB race. Our robotic platforms were build to showcase the possibilities unlocked by our research on movement-based control approaches for assistive devices we conduct at the ISIR - Institut des Systèmes Intelligents et de Robotique of Sorbonne Université. This was especially clear during the "Wire Loop" task, where Christophe used our CCC (Compensation Cancellation Control) to control the prosthetic solely through body movements. Christophe was the only pilot to complete this task without major compensations, an incredible feat given his physical challenges. Huge credit to Mathilde Legrand-Lestoille, Guillaume Morel, Alexis Poignant, and others who helped refining CCC into its advanced form. In the ROB race, Etienne expertly controlled the robot, using residual arm movements through a rgbd camera, like a conductor with an orchestra! Christophe’s resilience shone when he completed a race after losing the prosthetic hand mid-task. Restarting it independently, he displayed incredible skill and proved the reliability of our technology. Hats off to Etienne de Montalivet, Charlotte MARCHAND, creators of SAM and Sebastien Mick, who turned this system into a robust, personalized race machine. Christophe finished 6th out of 16 competitors in the ARM race—the highest-ranked pilot with an above-elbow amputation and the most complex device, which included motorized elbow and wrist. Etienne also delivered an impressive performance, juggling multiple control modes to complete tasks. And this was no easy feat, as the device itself continued to evolve up until the final days. Massive kudos to Robin GIBAUD, Alexis Poignant, and Guillaume Morel for their tireless work. The Smart ArM Rob platform, relying entirely on voluntary control, proved its robustness but required exceptional skill. Etienne’s silver medal in his first Cybathlon was well-earned! Beyond the technical achievements, preparing for and participating in CYBATHLON 2024 has been an unforgettable human adventure, filled with camaraderie and inspiring moments that will remain in our hearts. Thanks Robert Riener, Roland Sigrist, Annegret Kern and Katja Stoffels for setting this up ! To all Smart ArM team members—Christophe Huchet, Etienne Moullet, Océane DUBOIS, Sébastien Mick, Robin GIBAUD, Bruno Ricci, Guillaume Morel, Alexis Poignant, Julian Kulozik, Laurent Fabre, Guillaume Samain, Oryane Charbonnier, Apolline de Vaulchier du Deschaux, Yaodong LU, Pablo Nocito—and the talented former members (Charlotte MARCHAND, Mathilde Legrand-Lestoille, Christophe Blanc, Boladji Facia, Andrea Campanelli, and others who contributed): you are all remarkable, and we have every reason to be proud of our team!
