Our timetabling system Viriato has been successfully migrated to the latest Microsoft .NET 8 platform from the legacy .NET 4.8 Framework in the upcoming autumn release. Such migrations are costly, but without such technology modernisation projects, technical debt builds up and the developer experience suffers because new tools, libraries and language features are unavailable, leading to a vicious cycle that puts the fitness of the software for future development at risk.

St-Etienne Métropole: Analysis of the tram network and proposals for improvements St-Etienne Métropole (SEM) aims to improve the performance of their public transport network (trams and buses). The tram network currently comprises three lines, of which line T1 operates at 3' intervals and is overloaded for some services. The objectives of the study awarded to SMA are to analyse the current operation of the tram lines in terms of passenger numbers, timetables and punctuality. Based on this assessment and developments in the operating environment (e.g. the BRT M6+ project), proposals will be formulated for short and medium-term adjustments to the operating concept, which may include changes to the infrastructure, while maintaining the current size of the vehicle fleet. SMA’s annual company trip to Munich brought our teams together from their different locations across Europe: Zurich, Lausanne, Frankfurt and Paris. As is traditional for us, the journey itself has a special meaning: We had our symbolic convergence in Munich on Thursday where we shuffled our teams. The eight groups travelled onwards to different end stations of the S-Bahn. The teams then spent the afternoon together with various cultural, sporting activities and culinary programmes. Back in Munich on Friday morning, we started the day together and learnt about public transport in the Bavarian metropolis. For example, we were allowed to look behind the construction of Munich’s second core S-Bahn route, visited the airport and learnt about the development of public transport at the Munich Transport Corporation (MVG). And of course, a traditional beer garden was not to be missed in the evening! On Saturday we relaxed and explored the Munich Olympic Stadium and city centre. Our trip not only expanded our professional knowledge, but also fostered our impressive team spirit and gave us the opportunity to spend memorable time together. We would like to thank our hosts and tour guides, the organisers of our company trip and our great employees for these extraordinary three days. This is us, this is SMA!
