Feeding according to requirement, proper housing and good health of sows, piglets and grower-finisher pigs are decisive for economically successful pork production and guarantee Swiss consumers a product, i.e. pork, of the highest quality. Currently, the Agroscope’s Swine Research Unit focuses on three projects: MaternitySow, HealthyPig and PigEff2.0. The project MaternitySow aims to develop feeding strategies to limit weight loss and maximise intake during lactation while taking advantage of the resilience between lactation and pregnancy to limit the use of specific nutrients. The HealthyPig project aims to improve piglet health and reduce antibiotic use. This objective is pursued by exploring several approaches like specific nutritional strategies and innate immune stimulation. The project PigEFF2.0 is a continuation of previous studies on protein efficiency. In this project, we will now assess how pigs cope with unfavourable environmental conditions when fed protein and essential amino acids restricted diets. All the projects are partly embedded in the tree EU projects MonoGutHealth, PigWeb and Re-Livestock. In the Swine Research Unit, we are currently 5 researchers, Catherine Ollagnier responsible for the project HealthyPig, Marion Girard and Patrick Schlegel responsible for the project MaternitySow and Marion Lautrou and Giuseppe Bee responsible for the project PigEff2.0.

📢 I'm Roxana Elena Amarie, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pisa, and and I’m thrilled to share that my PLAS - Pisa animal science team and the Swine Research Group at Agroscope, in collaboration with Green Innovation GmbH, have started an exciting trial in Posieux! 🐷✨. 🔎 We are testing OXILEM, a supplement rich in polyphenols, in the diet of sows and piglets. 🎯Our aim? To find out whether the polyphenols in OXILEM can improve sow milk quality, promote piglet health and address post-weaning challenges such as diarrhoea and inflammation by improving gut health. Stay tuned for our results! 🚀

Another paper published! ✨ Our PhD student Inés García Viñado has published her second paper titled “Method: Standard Operating Procedure for the Administration of Swallowable Devices to Study Pig’s Gut Content in a Non-Invasive Way,” now available in Animal Open Space! 👩🏻🔬 👨🏻🔬 👨🏻🔬Co-authors: Catherine Ollagnier, Giuseppe Bee and Paolo Trevisi (MonoGutHealth MSCA-ITN) In this study, we introduce a comprehensive step-by-step protocol for administering Capsule for Sampling (CapSa) 💊, a biocompatible device designed to study the gut microbiota of pigs without causing harm. 🔍 Key Findings: ● We validated the protocol through two studies involving a total of 108 Swiss Large White pigs. ● In Study 1, 46.74% of administered capsules were recovered in feces within 72 hours, while Study 2 saw a remarkable recovery rate of 75.6%. ● The protocol accounts for crucial factors such as animal acclimation, housing modifications, and the use of a prokinetic agent to facilitate capsule retrieval. This research not only advances our understanding of pig microbiota but also establishes a valuable methodology for researchers looking to employ non-invasive sampling techniques. #MSCA #H2020 #Monoguthealth #scicomm

Dear colleagues, Help Pigweb develop new metadata standards! 🐷 Through the survey below, #PIGWEB is collecting metadata to further develop a livestock metadata standard. This work is critical because metadata standards provide uniform, accurate, and easily available data across investigations. Using a standard framework allows researchers to readily exchange, compare, and expand on one another’s work, boosting discovery and innovation! 👩🔬 💡 Contribute to furthering pig research and fill out the survey now 👉 https://lnkd.in/e26nJbew
