This week marked the World Mental Health Day, highlighting the importance of understanding the global impact of mental health issues and finding innovative approaches to improve care. One rapidly expanding area of study is Metabolic Psychiatry, which examines the link between metabolic dysfunction and mental health disorders. Research shows that poor metabolic health can contribute to mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. Diet, physical activity, and sufficient sleep all have direct effects on metabolic conditions such as insulin sensitivity. Addressing metabolic health offers significant potential to reduce the rising incidence of related mental health disorders, benefiting both individuals and insurers. Great energy at the 6th Advance CEO Breakfast, hosted by Andreas Berger, Group CEO Swiss Re, and led by Advance President Anna Mattsson, Partner McKinsey & Company, together with Malvika Singh, Managing Director #Impact, Initiator & Co-Founder of Advance. 👉🏻 This year’s edition was dedicated to intentional career sponsorship, a highly relevant lever for driving progress in gender equality in leadership. Why? 🔑 Career sponsorship is key: No promotion ever happens without a sponsor who knows about one’s performance, track record, and leadership potential – and who ADVOCATES for his or her “sponsee”. The need to consciously sponsor female talent early on becomes clear when looking at the hot off-the-press insights from the #GenderIntelligenceReport 2024, which Anna Mattson presented to kick off the event. 📊 While we have reached equality in education and see a balanced workforce in non-management, the imbalance in Switzerland is striking when considering positions with true influence and power. Women’s share of power positions is only 13%. We could leverage so much more potential for the greater good regarding GDP growth, innovation, and productivity. “It is like swimming with one arm tied to the back“, one panelist pointedly stated in the discussion. Imagine what forces we can unleash once we intentionally enable all our talents to thrive and engage to their best. So, what can we all do to move towards power balance? Top 3 Monday Morning Actions 🔸“Just do it” – start piloting career sponsorship for women without over-formalizing or creating more bureaucracy and scale what works. Choose to sponsor talents that are not a “mini-you”. 🔸Make it intentional and transparently performance-based; building trust to pave the way for candid feedback is essential. 🔸Hold leaders accountable for sponsoring diverse talent according to your goals. A very warm thank you to Anna Mattsson and Malvika Singh for leading through the conference and to the panelists for sharing their tested and proven practices on career sponsorship: Michael Steinmann, Managing Partner Switzerland at McKinsey & Company, Alison Martin, CEO EMEA & Bank Distribution Zurich Insurance Group, and Feroz Sheikh, Chief Information & Digital Officer Syngenta Group. And to all Advance Board Members: Andreas Berger, Florence Schnydrig Moser, Nicole Burth, Holger Laubenthal, Robert Itschner, Nora Teuwsen, and Marion Leslie. Special thanks to Swiss Re and team for the first-class hosting and to the Advance team for orchestrating: Alkistis Petropaki, Lena Schwerzmann, Konstantina Nani, Faye Witteveen, and Alexandra Rhiner. 🔥The 2023 Maui wildfires destroyed more than 80% of the power grid, highlighting the significant damage natural catastrophes can inflict on critical infrastructure, which can lead to service interruptions, business closures, and delayed emergency responses. The cascading effects of natural disasters are a growing risk for insurers and are expected to increase due to urbanisation, asset concentration in high-risk areas, and climate change.
