Beef and soy are key drivers of deforestation in Brazil. With a large portion of the Amazon rainforest already lost, pressure to stop clearances falls not only on those deforesting, but also on the consumers of these products. “The whole discussion has always been on the supply side,” says Eduardo Haddad, a professor from the Department of Economics of the University of São Paulo, “but the question now is: Where does this demand come from?” Whilst there are some exports to China, Europe, and other regions. A new study in Nature Sustainability reveals that the domestic market in Brazil accounts for 3x more deforestation than international demand. Despite the predominance of domestic consumption, beef exports from Brazil have been increasing. And international capital has a significant role in financing the country’s largest meat and soy companies. https://lnkd.in/er4qJ5pM #Beef #Amazon #Brazil #Deforestation #Rainforest #Soy #Cattle

A global partnership of champions for deforestation-free global & local economies as well as sustainable supply chains.
Info
A global multistakeholder partnership aims to remove deforestation from four global commodity supply chains: palm oil, beef, soy, and pulp and paper. The Alliance convenes over 110 partners representing governments, the private sector and civil society and works to: - Drive 10 priority actions to remove tropical deforestation from global agricultural supply chains, as defined in the Commodities and Forests Agenda 2020 - Support jurisdictional approaches by connecting jurisdictions in forest countries across Latin America, West and Central Africa and South-East Asia with stakeholders who can help them realize their forest conservation plans - Engage key emerging markets and the financial services sector in efforts to reduce commodity-driven deforestation

A new study suggests that without action, the Amazon rainforest may pass a carbon tipping point by the 2050s. The Amazon plays a crucial role in storing carbon and regulating global climate and influences regional and global rainfall. Deforestation, as well as drought conditions and extreme weather in the Amazon are increasing, causing tree die off - releasing stored carbon. A new study predicts that certain regions of the Amazon may pass a critical Tipping Point - turning from a carbon sink to a carbon source - by the middle of the 21st century. https://lnkd.in/gkaG2bSW #Amazon #Deforestation #TippingPoints #Drought #CarbonSink #ClimateChange

An Argentine federal judge has ordered a 3 month suspension of deforestation in northern Chaco province - a rare step to protect one of the world's woodland ecosystems. The province of Chaco is part of the American Gran Chaco - the largest forested region in South America after the Amazon and spans between Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil. The region produces soy, cattle, cotton, firewood, and tannins, and is home to a wide range of wildlife - including jaguars and manned wolves. The unusual (though not unprecedented) move, announced officially on the public prosecutor's office website, comes amid an investigation into illegal land clearance. https://lnkd.in/gvzCSDTH #Argentina #GranChaco #Deforestation #IllegalDeforestation

Palm oil is a ubiquitous ingredient found in many products we use daily, from food items to cosmetics and cleaning products. Its widespread use, however, has driven tropical deforestation in many areas of the world - driving biodiversity decline and carbon emissions. However sustainable palm oil aims to the issues associated with traditional palm oil production. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), established in 2004, is a leading organization that promotes the production and use of sustainable palm oil. To achieve RSPO certification, palm oil producers must adhere to stringent environmental criteria - including protecting high conservation value areas, reducing land use and increasing yields through improved agricultural practices, and zero burning, as well as regenerating forests through reforestation and agroforestry. Certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) can be traced from the plantation to the final product, which is crucial for companies in the supply chain and end consumers. #PalmOil #SupplyChains #Commodities #RSPO #CSPO

Brazil's emissions and challenges highly differ from the rest of the world - with the majority of emissions from Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU). The country is one of the largest exporters of commodities, including soy and beef. But according to a recent report by BCG, it also has the resources and comparative advantages to grow sustainable food at scale. The recovery of pasturelands represents a path to sustainably meet future food demand. In Brazil, over a third of land has already been converted into pastureland. And an area around 2x the size of France is underutilised and could be used for sustainable intensification. Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest rose in July for the first time in 15 months, breaking its streak of falling deforestation rates, government data has shown. This uptick has been driven by a number of factors - including a prolongued drought, forest fires, and the environmental workers' strike leading to a decline in enforcement and fines. However, while the data shows an increase in deforestation for July 2024, Amazon deforestation has fallen by nearly 46% in the last 12 months when compared to the previous period. And when looking at the long term trend, this is the largest reduction since 2016. https://lnkd.in/ebk95iDS #Deforestation #Forests #TropicalForests #Brazil #Amazon

Action on nature has become a fiduciary responsibility. Leading investors are already stepping up to get ahead of risk across land and ocean and seize the opportunity. A collaborative and increasingly aligned set of investor initiatives are taking shape to accelerate action. Those that are relevant to deforestation include: IPDD, IFACC Initiative, Nature Action 100, PRI Spring, and FSDA. In the run up to COP30, a group of nature-related investor stewardship initiatives and some of the world’s largest investors have come together to produce a briefing pack to help investors navigate this new moment on nature.
