On Thin Ice is a documentary series which goes behind the scenes of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour. The first series began in the summer of 2024 with new episodes dropping on a monthly basis until the start of the 2024-2025 season. This compelling series tracks the journey of the athletes across the World Tour, charting their highs and lows across a highly-competitive and technical sport contested on complex structures and in freezing winter conditions. The series also documents the rivalries, the camaraderie and the skills needed to succeed in competition ice climbing. On Thin Ice is produced by Technative with the support of the UIAA. Report from September 2024 UIAA member federations meeting The UIAA held its latest online member federation update at the end of September. These twice-yearly events provide a forum for the UIAA to present updates on the services it is delivering to members and in this particular case offered an opportunity to address the main talking points and agenda items at November’s annual UIAA General Assembly (GA) in Malta. Here is a summary of the key takeaways: https://lnkd.in/e3QE69ve

UIAA signs Brighton Plus Helsinki Declaration: Promotion of Women in Climbing and Mountaineering In September 2024 the UIAA – International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation – became a signatory of the Brighton Plus Helsinki Declaration, an “international treaty that has become a road map to support the ongoing development of a more fair and equitable system of sport and physical activity, fully inclusive of women and girls”, developed by the International Working Group (IWG) on Women and Sport. “I am excited and privileged to sign the Brighton plus Helsinki 2014 Declaration on Women and Sport on behalf of the UIAA. It is an honour that I take seriously and solemnly on behalf of our organisation. It is encouraging that increasing numbers of women are active members of our climbing communities. Many women are pushing the boundaries of climbing, and many more participate for the fun and physical challenges. However, it is clear that both at a participation level and at an institutional level, there is unfortunately still significant work to do. I applaud the International Working Group on Women and Sport for its work and this initiative. I look forward to working together towards a mountaineering and climbing culture that enables and values women’s full involvement in every aspect of our wonderful sport.” – UIAA President Peter Muir Full details on the signing and what it means: https://lnkd.in/evx3PXdC

After #Aconcagua #Denali and #Fuji, the latest in the UIAA's high peak series focuses on Africa's highest point, #Kilimanjaro The next article is on #Everest Strange as it may sound, Kilimanjaro (5895m/19650ft) in Tanzania is perhaps one of the most dangerous mountains in the world. Despite reliable weather and straightforward access, illness and injury are commonplace. Of the more than 40,000 visitors Kili attracts each year, between 50 and 75% turn back before reaching the summit. What’s the reason for this? In one word – altitude. Altitude presents humans with a host of problems. On Kilimanjaro ‘Kili’ the combination of cold, dehydration and acute mountain sickness seems to be responsible for turning most people back. Preventing these is the key to climbing the mountain. This paper provides essential advice for anyone considering climbing Kilimanjaro. https://lnkd.in/g7JmgJfi

Acute mountain sickness (AMS), high altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) and high altitude cerebral oedema (HACE) are the most important and most common altitude related diseases. Primary prevention is considered the gold standard to avoid altitude illness. This video tackles the measures essential to preventing high-altitude illnesses when air pressure decreases with elevation and less oxygen becomes available, what the symptoms are, and what to do to best treat such a condition. https://lnkd.in/ehBqKhfR
