WIPO Director General Daren Tang visited the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in Alicante on October 8, 2024, to discuss ways of strengthening the partnership between the two organizations and celebrate EUIPO’s 30th anniversary. During the visit, Mr. Tang met with EUIPO Executive Director João Negrão to discuss opportunities for enhanced collaboration in areas such as data exchange, business processes, and customer satisfaction. Both heads emphasized the important role of AI in delivering more efficient IP services. A highlight of the visit was the IP Management Clinic, a joint initiative between WIPO and EUIPO that has supported over 700 SMEs globally since its inception. This session focused on the furniture industry, an innovation-driven sector valued at over $500 billion globally and employing around a million EU workers. Mr. Tang engaged with representatives from four companies—Gemla, Gärsnäs, Studio Harris, and Love2Design—who shared how the clinic has positively impacted their businesses. Many of these businesses are now embedding IP strategies into their broader business plans, demonstrating a deeper understanding of the critical role that IP plays in fostering innovation and growth. Mr. Tang and Mr. Negrão reaffirmed the long-standing cooperation between their respective organizations and their commitment to delivering tangible results for businesses in the years ahead. WIPO Director General Daren Tang visited Hungary, where he met President Tamás Sulyok, high-level government officials, business leaders and other stakeholders from the country’s innovation and creative sectors. In conversation with President Sulyok, Mr. Tang pledged WIPO’s support to the country and highlighted the role Hungary has played in building the international IP system. Mr. Tang noted especially the contributions made by Árpád Bogsch, a Hungarian national who served as WIPO’s Director General from 1973 to 1997. As part of his visit, Mr. Tang also participated in the International Conference “Intellectual Property in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” where he delivered a keynote address and emphasized the importance of keeping human creativity at the center of IP systems while leveraging AI for innovation. Additionally, Mr. Tang held meetings with Boglárka Illés, State Secretary for Bilateral Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Szabolcs Farkas, President of the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office, and Balázs Gulyás, President of the Hungarian Research Network. WIPO Director General Daren Tang visited United Nations headquarters in New York, where he addressed the Summit of the Future, participated in the opening of the High Level Week of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly and held a series of other engagements. During his four-day visit, he discussed how intellectual property and innovation can help address global challenges at the Summit of the Future, where world leaders adopted the Pact for the Future, which includes the Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. As part of his visit, he also spoke at the “SDG Digital 2024: A Digital Future for All” event, joined young entrepreneurs during the ITC Ye! Youth Ecopreneur Awards 2024 and moderated a discussion with global business leaders on responsible digital transformation during the annual UN Private Sector Forum 2024. Mr. Tang also held bilateral meetings with Heads of other Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs), including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); as well as the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). Additionally, Mr. Tang met the President of Botswana as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, reaffirming WIPO’s support to both countries in further developing their innovation ecosystem.
