Glaciers are critical to life. They store 70% of the world’s fresh water, providing a vital source for over 2 billion people who rely on them for drinking water, food security and livelihoods. Glaciers also regulate the climate and support ecosystems. Yet, they are increasingly under threat, melting rapidly due to the climate crisis. In 2023, glaciers experienced their greatest water loss in over 50 years. As they disappear, the consequences are far-reaching. We are witnessing escalating water scarcity, rising sea levels and an increased risk of natural disasters such as floods and landslides. Two UN guesthouses in Gaza were hit in strikes on Wednesday, killing one of our colleagues and seriously injuring five more. This brings the number of UN colleagues killed in Gaza since 7 October 2023 to at least 280. #UnitedNations Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemns all attacks on UN personnel and calls for a full investigation. The incident follows reports of strikes on Tuesday that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people, including many children, making it one of the deadliest days in Gaza since the war began. The Secretary-General underscores that all conflicts must be conducted in a way that ensures civilians are respected and protected, and that international law must be complied with at all times. https://lnkd.in/ghwmhqdT
