We are happy to announce a significant milestone for the 'Nature Park Stations' project! The Bernese Nature Parks, cantonal government departments, and environmental organizations have jointly developed and signed a new agreement focused on strengthening and harmonizing visitor management in biodiversity hotspots. 🌲 🦉 This commitment aims to enhance visitor experiences across the Chasseral, Gantrisch, and Diemtigtal regional parks while also boosting the protection of their natural habitats and wildlife.   Currently, these stunning landscapes face growing pressure from visitor activities, emphasizing the need for sustainable management. In addition to improving habitat protection for endangered species, the project aims to foster cross-sector cooperation, minimize environmental impact, and promote sustainable recreation. 🌍 Meeting climate targets has never been more critical. For a successful energy transition, renewable energy expansion must accelerate, gaining local acceptance without harming nature. 💡 🌱 The Wyss Academy has supported a recent SCNAT - Swiss Academy of Sciences project that intends to support integrated, national spatial planning of renewable energy plants, balancing #biodiversity and #landscape goals. This initiative provides scientific criteria to identify priority areas with minimal impact. Our co-financed project aligns with our mission to foster a just and beneficial relationship between people and nature. 📽 The Wyss Academy is thrilled to announce the ImagiNATION short film competition, a unique storytelling initiative that brings together young filmmakers and changemakers from Kenya, Peru, and Switzerland. In collaboration with the Wyss Academy for Nature's Changemakers Program, EthnoKino Festival Doc Impact Lab, and 2291 Festival, this competition aims to translate the ambitions of young visionaries and social entrepreneurs into creative audiovisual productions. 🌍✨ Ten submissions—which highlight issues of climate change, conservation, and land restoration—will be evaluated by a four-member jury of experts, among them Alice Apley, Executive Director of Documentary Educational Resources (DER); Gabriel Lama Oliart, Head of Solutions Mapping at the UNDP Accelerator Labs and Cultural and Social Innovation Designer; and Urs Bühler, Journalist and Editor of the Magazin "NZZ am Sonntag". 🗣 “It is those people at the forest frontier holding an axe that have the biggest influence over what happens.”    The “true” value of forests is a collection of varying perceptions and knowledge, but one thing is clear; targeted policy and advocacy is critical. An empowered population is influential in developing and actioning proper forest management frameworks to achieve economic, environmental and socio-cultural benefits for local communities.    At the Wyss Academy Dialogue on the True Value of Forests held in Maroantsetra, Madagascar, responsible exploitation and sustainable preservation of forests is the balance hoped for. For me, there is no other place in this world that has such contradictory effects on my emotions than the district of Maroantsetra in North-Eastern Madagascar. On the one hand, it causes the most high-flying and elated feelings of unmatched beauty of nature, people,and culture, and on the other hand the deepest despair and sorrow for the lack of global environmental justice, finance, infrastructure, and access to education and medical care. With our long-term research and engagement we might only be a drop in the ocean of needs. Still, this week’s Dialogue with Purpose on the True Value of Forests has been a beautiful example of the collaborative energy that can emerge if you bring very diverse participants together with the right kind of facilitation to make everyone feel comfortable to participate. Seeing a barefoot farmer from one of our engagement villages in honest dialogue with a most esteemed Senior Professor from the capital’s most highly rated academic institution really brings optimism. Through the inclusion in a global cross-continental process, finally, these local voices from the most remote regions will be brought into global conservation fora.
