The PharmaLedger consortium and project researched the value of blockchain technology for the healthcare industry.

Info

The 3-year PharmaLedger project (2020-2022) sought to bring value and trust to the healthcare ecosystem through targeted research of blockchain technology to solve healthcare challenges. The goal of the project was to provide a widely trusted platform that would support the design and adoption of blockchain-enabled healthcare solutions while accelerating delivery of innovation to benefit the entire ecosystem - from manufacturers to patients. The PharmaLedger project was a public/private consortium comprising 30 partners from 13 countries. This included 12 large pharmaceutical companies; highly innovative technology SMEs specializing in blockchain development, security, privacy and business intelligence; universities and research institutes specializing in pharmacoeconomic analysis, research of patient requirements, big data analytics and electronic health records; leading clinical research organizations; supply chain partners; patient representatives; and leading healthcare service providers. When the project ended in December 2022, one of the consortium members, the not-for-profit PharmaLedger Association, inherited the project’s use cases and now continues the work of digital transformation in healthcare. The PharmaLedger project was funded through the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) 2 Joint Undertaking and listed under grant agreement No.85399. This Joint Undertaking received support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, and the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA).
