  • African Development Bank Celebrates Three Decades Of Japan-Backed Bilateral Trust Fund Created by #Japan in 1994, the Policy and Human Resource Development Grant (PHRDG) has contributed significantly to the development of Africa's human capital, supporting over 100 transformational projects across various sectors. Among the most impactful PHRDG-funded initiatives is the Japan-Africa Dream Scholarship Program (JADS), that aims to develop Africa’s human capital by offering scholarships to high-achieving African students for master’s studies in fields such as agriculture, development economics, energy, and public health. To date, the program has awarded scholarships to 23 students from 10 African countries, two-thirds of them women. JADS graduates have gone on to make significant contributions in their home countries. Alumni include Mary Yeboah Asantewaa from Ghana, who now works at SORA Technology in Accra leveraging drone technology to control infectious diseases, and Glory Sibale from Malawi, who joined Tokyo’s Taiyo-Yuka recycling company, focusing on sustainable agricultural project management. Presenting a commemorative publication on the trust fund at the Ministry of Finance in Tokyo during a recent mission to the country, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, African Development Bank Group President said the publication highlights three decades of successful collaboration and the impactful projects funded by the Policy and Human Resource Development Grant, as well as the critical role the grant has played in Africa’s socioeconomic development. • Japan boosts African Development Fund with ¥51.67 billion concessional loan   The African Development Bank Group and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a landmark 51.67 billion Japanese yen ($421 million) concessional donor loan agreement towards the #AfricanDevelopmentFund (ADF). The loan will help boost ADF’s efforts to support development in Africa's least developed and fragile countries. The Japanese government is a top donor to the African Development Fund, having contributed the largest loans to the Fund's 14th, 15th and 16th replenishments. African Development Bank Group President Dr Akinwumi Adesina, who is on his fifth visit to the Asian nation, commended Japan’s government for its unwavering support. He expressed the Bank Group's appreciation for Japan’s broader partnership, saying "We wouldn't have had a successful ADF-16 replenishment without Japan's continued support for concessional donor lending. It is important to sign these agreements, but it is the lives we touch that matter. We deliver what we promise. We keep our word." Visit our website for more details on this landmark deal: https://bit.ly/3BNaKxo #AfDBinJapan #ADFMTR16
