A bold and expensive vision: Rail and Mass Transit Roundup for 3Q24 The government’s plans to revive Colombia’s rail network move slowly but the press was active this quarter with news about the main cargo projects, regional light rail and, of course, Bogotá’s Metro. The government also presented its full plans and estimated costs to Congress. An iron road running from the sea to the sea President Gustavo Petro got everyone’s attention when he said Colombia should build a terrestrial alternative to the Panama Canal, a railroad connecting the Atlantic and the Pacific. It is variously called the “Transocean” and “The Darien Train”, the latter a more explicit description of the plan to span the 260 kilometers from a bay on the Pacific Coast, Cupicá in Chocó to Turbo in Antioquia on the Gulf of Urubá, crossing the Darien region of Colombia. Turbo is fishing port but Cupicá is a village of 1,200 people... #renewableenergy #renewablenergy #renewablepower #energyindustry #epowercolombia #energy

Colombia to limit energy exports, again The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MinEnergia) announced a restriction on energy exports to Ecuador as part of a broader strategy to address the country’s ongoing drought crisis and preserve local power supplies. The move is one of six key measures aimed at boosting reservoir levels during the dry season, a critical source of energy in Colombia, where 78% of electricity is generated through hydropower, Bloomberg en Linea reported. The decision follows the introduction of Resolution 40330 of 2024, which had previously allowed energy exports to Ecuador under the condition that Colombia’s domestic energy needs were fully met. With growing concerns over potential power shortages and depleting water reserves, Colombia is now ... #renewableenergy #renewablenergy #renewablepower #energyindustry #epowercolombia #energy

Colombia’s progress in renewable energy Carlos Correa Flórez, Director of the Unit of Mining and Energy Planning (UPME), opened the “Colombia Toward a Sustainable Energy Future” forum by outlining the nation’s advancements in energy transition. He emphasized the relevance of infrastructure, stating, “the energy transition is key to mitigating climate change, but it cannot succeed without robust transmission infrastructure,” La Republica reported. Correa highlighted the government’s action plan with the slogan, “Without transmission, there is no transition.” This initiative has led to significant progress in transmission system upgrades, with the awarding of multiple transmission contracts to boost energy distribution across the country... #renewableenergy #renewablenergy #renewablepower #energyindustry #epowercolombia #energy

Government denies energy shortage The Colombian government reaffirmed that the country is not facing any imminent energy shortage, despite decreasing water levels in reservoirs, which are crucial for energy generation. Since July 2024, daily usable water levels in reservoirs have been falling, reaching 52.22% on September 11, according to data from XM. This has raised concerns among analysts, who warn that energy rationing risks for 2025 may be increasing, La Republica reported. However, the government has maintained its position that there is no risk of energy supply shortages or rationing next year... #renewableenergy #renewablenergy #renewablepower #energyindustry #epowercolombia #energy

Energy reconfiguration auctions? The Energy and Gas Regulatory Commission (CREG) is preparing three energy reconfiguration auctions to address future energy shortages. This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Mines and Energy’s (MinEnergia) efforts to secure reliable energy for the country, Valora Analitik reported. According to the draft resolution, CREG will conduct three auctions for Firm Energy Obligations (OEF) for the periods 2025-2026, 2026-2027, and 2027-2028. The auctions aim to ensure energy supply, especially during periods of high demand. Participants, including new and existing thermal plants, must meet specific criteria, such as declaring uncommitted firm energy and complying with environmental regulations. Those with early operational readiness may also receive incentives... #renewableenergy #renewablenergy #renewablepower #energyindustry #epowercolombia #energy

Electricity demand expected to increase The Mining and Energy Planning Unit (UPME) released a new report forecasting that the country’s electricity demand will experience an increase. The expected increased is 2.83% from 2024 to 2038, La Republica reported. This anticipated increase considers the impact of large special consumers, electric mobility, and distributed generation on overall energy consumption. “We based our projections on historical demand data, economic growth expectations, and other key variables influencing consumption levels,” said Adrián Correa, Director of UPME... #renewableenergy #renewablenergy #renewablepower #energyindustry #epowercolombia #energy

Companies dispute Petro’s claims In response to recent statements by President Gustavo Petro regarding electricity tariffs in Colombia, several industry associations, including Andesco, Acolgen, Andeg, Asocodis, Naturgas, and SER Colombia, have issued clarifications. They aim to address what they see as inaccuracies in the President’s comments, Valora Analitik reported. Contrary to Petro’s assertion that Colombia is the only country in Latin America where energy costs are not state-regulated, the associations argue that this is incorrect. They explained that under Laws 142 and 143 of 1994, the Energy and Gas Regulatory Commission (CREG) regulates energy prices in Colombia... #renewableenergy #renewablenergy #renewablepower #energyindustry #epowercolombia #energy

Will there be enough generation in 2025? Some analysts think there will not be enough generating capacity to satisfy demand as early as 2025. The Minister, unsurprisingly, assures that there will be. Obviously both demand and supply will determine what happens and both are highly uncertain. To each according to their need The lead graph shows the first half of the story, daily demand from January 1, 2019 (i.e. a full year before the Covid-19 pandemic) through to last weekend, August 25, 2024 in GWh. The pandemic is clearly visible but demand varies considerably depending on the day of the week (lower on Sunday), the season (lower during traditional holiday periods like the end of the year) and simply day-to-day... #renewableenergy #renewablenergy #renewablepower #energyindustry #epowercolombia #energy
